>>Has anybody ever produced any F2 parsonii? I have heard that this has never been done. Why are parsonii so hard to breed? Is there any efforts underway in Madagascar to farm this species and are there ever going to be anymore imports? From what I can tell there is only a small number of captive parsonii left and what will people do when the genepool runs out.

Matt,
At this time, I am aware of at least 4 undeniably legitimate F2 clutches of Calumma p. parsonii hatching. All these animals have been and are being very carefully placed in what the breeders hope will be the best possible situations. The first F2 clutch hatched in March 2002 by a German breeder. It has been difficult to get parsonii to copulate in captivity. Once this occurs, there have been numerous loses of gravid females due to egg binding problems and laying issues. Once laying occurs successfully, the eggs have a long incubation, one of the longest recorded reptilian incubation times, 16-21 months. A lot can and often does go wrong in this amount of time and when they do reach full term, many of the fully formed babies die in the egg being unable to get out of their eggs for unknown reasons as their eggs are very thick. It is completely illegal for any C. parsonii to leave Madagascar, WC, CB or Farmed, as per the standing 1995 CITES recommendation to the party states. The number of captive C. parsonii is pretty small and there have been a very large number of loses for the number currently surviving in captivity. As a result, breeders and keepers have been and need to continue to be very careful to only distribute these animals to people they feel will be qualified to care for and hopefully breed these beautiful animals.
