What happens to the eggs when they lay in the gound on Long Island, NY ?

They get eaten by moles before they go bad. Spica's clutch sat in the ground for a month. 12 of 17 big fat eggs had mole bites and although a few looked suitable for incubation, they are all rotted now. Top egg of nest in lower right corner after wood board removed.
