Eggs turning yellow after 89 days?

boy Sep 21, 2004 02:51 AM

So this is obviously a question for those experienced with hatching Uroplatus eggs.

I'm sitting on this one clutch of eggs from a pair of my Spear points and they've just hit the 91 day marker. On the 89th day one of the eggs started to turn yellow in color. Neither of the eggs have been moved and are being incubated at 72 degrees fahrenheit, which is what I incubate all my ebans and satanics at. All of my clutches thus far have hatched between 81 and 85 days, so hitting 91 days is a bit long for me. Anyone have any input or insight to this. Temps have remained constant but spiked up to 82 degrees for a few days because of the heat wave we had in Pasadena and my airconditioning not working. I've never had an egg turn any colors while incubating, they either live or just die and noticably die. I was thinking about cracking it open but don't have the nerve to do it yet. The other egg is still white and color and looks like it will pop any day now too.

I'm all ears.

im sure theres a number of possibilities. for my phantasticus eggs, i think i remember them becoming somewhat darker in color before they hatched, and i think it had to do with the fact that the egg was thinning down as they grew and their color was starting to show through a little bit. however, since this is noticeable and other eggs have stayed white, perhaps the baby failed to hatch. i know my phantasticus hatched like clockwork, those from the same clutch hatched within minutes of each other. i personally would wait until at least 100 days had passed before i would open them up.

My eggs hatched with in hours of each other normally. They have never changed color like this before. The yellow egg has turned a canary yellow/fried egg yolk color whereas the white egg has remained the same color of white from the begining. Have you had any eggs go right up 100 days? I'm that it will hatched by day 100 because I'll be a bit crushed at this hatching if it doesn't.

Do you have any other Uroplatus besides phantasticus? offspring available?

I've had satanics go over 4 months in incubation, with fluctuating temps, so I wouldnt be opening anything. I've also had them hatch out days apart, as with every Uro, lots of variables in everything they do.

Sounds like your egg has failed to hatch though, unfortunately, this isnt terribly uncommon in egg laying species.

I'm not willing to say its dead yet.

AT day 100 I'll crack that one open. The other I'll hold off on though.

I have had henkeli eggs hatch strong, healthy babies between the 4-5 month mark (113 days being the longest) with slightly fluctuating temps (avg 72) so I definately would not interfere...

Actually, my fingers failed me when I came up with the 113 day incubation period as my longest... I had an egg laid on the 23rd of Feburary and hatch a beautiful baby on the 13th of July... So yeah, that's 142 days... Long wait, but well worth it...

on second thought, maybe i wouldnt crack it open at 100 days. only once i was sure that nothing was coming out would i decide to "crack it open. i would hate to find a live one when i opened it. the yellow color sounds more and more like the egg actually did go foul. the first clutch i ever hatched had one egg that was somehow completely empty when i decided to check up on it, because it simply crumbled. it didnt make much sense to me that a lizard could lay an egg with nothing but a shell with air inside. i figure something went wrong with it soon after it was laid.
