Egg production

zrho Sep 21, 2004 09:21 AM

I'm assuming that females will produce eggs seasonally regardless of whether or not they have successfully bred, is this the case?

I'm confident that both of my females are working on clutches, but I really have not seen any evidence that Randy (the male) was working his mojo with the ladies - other than climbing on their head to get to his desired perch. That seldom makes a good impression.

yeah, they DO seem to not care if its a living branch or not when they want to get somewhere
unless the "Branch" they are climbing over suddenly throws her body backwards just holding on with her back legs

Sorry to admit it but I had to laugh when I saw that happen to McGruff (the new male) from My Erowen

I am not so sure that is the case. I have had many more fertile than non-fertile eggs. I also seem to only get eggs every other year. I figure that the female is gravid with her first clutch for 4 months then an additional 2.5-3 months with up to 3 consecutive clutches. If you figure that up they are gravid for 10-12 months. I am beginning to believe that they only cycle every other year as they are totally depleated when they finish a season. I am hoping to eventually cycle my females so that I have half laying every other year alternating so that there are half the eggs but every year instead of every other.

As for not seeing them do the deed doesn't mean they didn't do it! I have only caught them in the act 2 or 3 times in the 5 years I've been working with them! From all the babies I know they are getting together if you know what I mean
