Deworming

Charlotte Sep 21, 2004 10:18 AM

What is the best way to deworm an iguana?
Usually, how many dewormings does it take to clear them of parasites?
Thanks
Charlotte

well depending on if this is just a routine worming or if you have signs of worms. if you have signs of wroms like if you can see them. i would take them to the vet. the wormer at the store may not do the job. but for routine worming i use the stuff you get at the pet store. i follow the directions on the bottle. i usually repeat in 3 weeks.

The best thing to do is take it to the vet and a fecal. The vet then can tell you what type of worms it has and treat it. The vet has the safest meds for igs. You can't go wrong

This is the same iggy that I posted about yesterday.
The bloated one that isn't pooping.
So, there is no sample to get.

I'm really worried about the guy. And even more worried because I put him in my reptile room for a day or so and was told that I now have exposed all my herps to parasites. He is obviously seperated now, but I'm concerned it may be worms...

But no poopy to sample.
Any suggestions??

A vet can do a light enema, which might get things started again if there is constipation. If you left him there all day, the vet can try again an hour or two later.

The vet can probe him and get some poop on the probe. This way he can see what is going on. He may have a blockage or who knows what. I would NOT treat it for worms unless you are 100% sure that is the problem. Good luck and post with updates.

Because various types of nematodes and other organisms live normally in the guts of healthy iguanas, we never want to "routinely" worm them. The only time worming or other de-parasitizing should be done is if there are clinical levels of specific organism seen in a properly prepared fecal sample.

More information on worming - and why pet store products are not an alternative to a proper vet testing of a fecal sample - see my article Reptile parasites and wormers.

If there is no poop coming out, the problem may not be parasites - there may be a foreign object blocking the gut. If there is, and you try to force feeding, fluids, or an OTC wormer, you could make things much worse than they are...
