Rescued Dragon Not Eating

jenjoe928 Sep 21, 2004 11:19 AM

We rescued Simba a beautiful yellow male dragon on the 14th of this month he ate great until Sunday when he started to refuse to eat. I have bathed him daily, and offer his greens, crickets, waxworms, and superworms to him daily but to no avail. I have made a appointment for him on Friday with the vet any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jen

Hey Jen it's Robyn from RZ. I saw your boy there (even though I can't post) but anyway He's beautiful, and you are doing a great thing helping him. What I had to do when Zatarain didn't eat was force feed. I put in a blender greens, pellets any you may wanna add insects (i didn't she was on a low protien diet) I made it really runny and used an eye dropper and intil the end she would lick it up. Oh I also added her vit/min to the mix right before feeding it to her. I know you have all the temps & lights right so no need to go there. Is he pooping? That's the best help I can be, I wish you the best with him.

Hey Robyn, We have definately missed at RZ. I will try the blending everything. I know that the person we took it from before he stopped feeding Simba altogther he was feeding him only carrots and iceberg lettuce, so my husband thinks that maybe his eyesight has gone to the point where he can see the food, but I disagree becuase the moment that he can see Zion he is doing a mating dance for her. I thought that it might be that he wasn't eating because of her so I put up a sheet between the cages.
You said you did this with Zatarian until the end.... did she pass? If so I am deeply sorry for your loss. I know you loved the cajun queen very much.
On another subject are you going to the Reptile show in Havre De Grace next weekend? I think we are going to go. Thinking about picking up something but what I don't know yet. Thanks for the help. Keep in touch. Jenjoe928@msn.com

also what about light and temp?

if this is an adult with decent size and fat reserves he may just want to take a nap.

really: if the night time temps get to say 75 and if he can see the sunset or if the artifical day lenght is less than 10 hours it could trigger burmination.

you may want to make sure you give lots of light and keep him above 70-75 at night.

also even if your light duration and night temps are good he may still go thru a few adjustmnent periods.

has poop been every day or ???

what age ?
length ?
grams body weight?

what can you tell us about prior care, lights, temps?

he may just need a few weeks to sort out the changes.

but do have a fecal done -- never hurts and may spot a problem.

Her new dragon was a rescue she has had it about a week I think, he is so thin I can't belive he's alive! She knows all about temp & lights. I'll leave it to her to post pictures of him here, but it's very bad what that last owner did to him. Make me sick. JenJoe928 knows about beardie's and will try anything to get this guy back on his feet. Best of luck Jen!

Well the information I have on him is slight as he was a rescue and the person I got him from the owner had dropped him off there for a "few days" almost a year ago.

Male dragon
yellow color
Lenght approx. 18" STL
Weight: starving

I would post pictures if I could figure out how to do so on this sight, ohterwise pictures can be viewed at repticzone.com under the profile for Jenjoe928.

All lighting and substrate is good. He ate fine for 5 days and hasn't eaten for approx. 3 days now, I will try the force feeding.

Thanks,
Jen

OK, I did not know how much the person has done with bd's.

some times we get folks who are tying to help cause they found out how messed up the bd is; even if they never had one before.

and yea, sometimes folks can really make you wonder...

like the two that were kept like they were FROGS or sumpthin...
covered in mould and stuff .... Grrr....

there are 2 other threads I think from this mess...

and
http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=569516,569516
that last link is the first post, read it and be amazed at:

a) how stupid some folks can be
b) how tough a bd can be

"when she got them home we checked them out and found out they were COVERED IN MOLD, the cage had a misting system in it and they were also very malnurished and very small,"
Grrrrrrr.........
