Weird Tokay Behavior?

tazziesmommy Sep 21, 2004 02:01 PM

I've had several Tokays for several years now, but my newest Tokay (male - about 8 months old) has been doing something really strange over the past couple of months. Among the many fake plants (and other things) in his tank is an 8" long plant stem with many leaves and three blue flowers. At least once or twice a day, he grabs the "plant" by one of the blue flowers and whips it against the walls or rocks or cork bark - as if he were "killing" it. I've seen other tokays do this with a pinky, but never a flower. Do you think he is just "playing" or is something possibly missing from his diet. I don't know if this is something that is bothering him that I need to remove or something that he is having fun playing with. Maybe they "play" to learn how to kill prey???
Anybody seen this behavior in a tokay before?? He is otherwise in perfect health. Very large for a tokay, active, eats great, bright colors, etc.
Thanks!
Lisa

Funny story.....

Maybe he is territorial or something and sees the flower as a threat.

I have never seen a Tokay do that except like you said when taking pinkies. I've raised dozens of hatchlings and never seem them do anything like that but then again I have plastic hanging plants in all my Tokay tanks but none with blue flowers, maybe its a blue thing
