first time breeding question(s)...

kidcrazee82 Sep 21, 2004 04:35 PM

I was wondering if there were any specific things i should do to induce mating between my crestie's. I have a male and a female in a 20gal high tank, real plants, good temp and humidity. I feed them crickets and baby food w/crestie diet(alternating days). the two of them spend all their time together, even sleeping together every day, but no eggs. any suggestions would help. thanks - Joe

You mention good temps but dont say what that is.Cresteds in nature begin breeding according too season triggered by temp. Your temps might be too low ,You dont mention thier weight or size .Your female and or Male might not be mature enough as of yet. (which could cause a great deal of problems for the female)
Your diet isnt bad but you dont mention dusting the crickets with calcium your female might not have enough calcium in herdiet to produce eggs. You dont mention if she has a nest box.She will hold back if you dont supply a suitable nest box..You dont mention how you have your plants. She may have buried the eggs very deep in the plants .You dont mention how long youve had them ..her season could be over for the year ..or you might just be impatient .. nature is not in a hurry
All these things may help get you on your way ....

The temps range from 67-69(night) to about 76-78(day). She has a nest box, which is a small(about 8" high) plastic critter keeper(no lid) filled with a mixture of moss and eco-earth dirt that is constantly damp. I have a uva/b 2.0 lamp(20gal high tank). the female is about 33-34 grams, the male is about 27-28 grams. I gut load the crickets and i give them crested diet in baby food, the female does not eat too many crickets, her main dish is the crested diet and the male prefers the crickets. As for the ages, i got them from a pet store so the ages are unknown. The substrate that i have been using is eco-earth, but do to a recent infestation of fruit flies, i am switching to forest bedding. the plants are in the eco earth dirt being watered everyday, i check the roots occasionally because i know they sometimes bury the eggs there. impatience is probably the answer, but i have had them since about april and thought something would have happened by now. the two of them spend all day and night together, always sleeping on each other even though theres plenty of room for them to sleep in different areas. oh well, i guess ill just keep waiting. Thanks -Joe
