Question about breeding programs in Madagascar

chimbakka Sep 21, 2004 05:14 PM

I'm just curious as to whether anyone here has any knowledge/info about breeding programs in Madagascar aimed at reviving some of the endangered species there? I often watch shows like that on Discovery, about different groups of people going to a country and working with a specific animal, and it got me thinking. does anyone know what would be involved in such a trip (other than a ton of cash)?

A ton of cash and a lot of cooperation and permitting from a disorganized government. Getting a license and permits from a government that is preoccupied with massive malnutrition, poverty, land destruction, corruption, education issues, and finances to staff their agencies will be a huge part of the equation. A couple of breeders are trying it now, but they are pretty experimental and small scale.

If you know of any groups in Canada, i'd be glad to hear about them. This is something I am going to be looking into over the next few years... I would LOVE to go there and set up breeding programs in the country, but I think I'd have to win the lottery first lol
