Breeding hets....................(not any time soon but need info)

drkind Sep 21, 2004 05:33 PM

Ok here I am reading all this BS about people selling fake hets. Of course I think that sucks big time, but It is makeing me think alot!

In two or three years(knock on wood,I hope,Ihope,Ihope) I will have hets for sale. What can I do to prove they are hets? I'm going to try to breed my male albino burm to my female albino, het lab. The wizard says 50%albino,50%albino,het lab. Now I know 50%het's are not a big deal, and I would sell (the few I wounld not keep) them for normal albino prices, but what about when I have 100% hets, I know to take a butt load of pics, of everything, but is there any thing else I can do.

I know I have alot of time to think about this, as these "breeders" are only 3&5 months old. But I thought why not ask what kind of proof every one wants?

Thanks.

BTW I do know that just cause the wizard says 50/50 doesn't meen 1/2 the babies will be het, it meens I have a 50/50 chance with each egg,....that's right, right?

Take pictures of the parents and guarantee genetics so that someone can could come back to you if they thought they were sold a fake. Also the whole 50/50 thing means that (in terms of odds) 50% of your clutch should be albino and 50% albino het. Its kinda the same as 50/50 per egg but its just odds and not usually a good thing to depend on. Good luck.

Het burms are really not worth a great deal more than non-hets. And people wont really pay that much more for het animals either. Simply because a het will produce more hets. Yes I know it will also produce homozygous offspring if paired right, but you will still get some that are just hets.

If you were dealing with retics, or another species, where the price would jump a grand if it is het or not, I would worry about it, and take pics of the copulation, and make guarantees. But unfortunately with burms, you are realistically looking at 25-50 dollars per snake, MAYBE.

Its up to you to decide whether its worth it or not. But think about anything the person you bought your het from did to make you comfortable about buying your het, and do that.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips!

Onebigred I know your right about het burms not being worth much. I was just useing that as an example cause I have the pair. I am working with a friend that has a male albino retic. were going to try to breed him with my female super tiger in a year or two, when she is ready, she's only about 4-5' now so I have a year or two to wait.

As to my het, she came from "a top breeder" and his name was enough to tell me she is a het.

Thanks for the help, and I know I have a few years to get it all down, I just like to get my info BEFORE I need it.

I wonder if you are interpreting the wizard's results right. All the babies are albino. Some of them are also het lab, but you can't tell which ones. Easiest solution is to sell them as albinos and not even mention the lab. I'm assuming that the selling price of an albino is not increased by the chance that it is het lab, too, though.
