Getting to know your fellow herper -- Completely O/T!

jordanm Sep 21, 2004 06:35 PM

Well the board has been a little slow the past few days, and every once in awhile a reg will post some O/T interests, which I find very amusing. Some people seem to bond a bit off the boards as well. So I figured I'd just make a topic to come out and say whatever you want to about yourself! Where you live, your interests, job, kids, hobbies (aside from snakes!), other critters etc... you get the point. I guess that makes me first..

I'm currently in school at The University of Georgia, and should :fingers crossed: be graduating next winter (already one semester late) with a degree in Economics... after which I have no clue what I'm doing.
I have two roomates and we have a white German Shepard and a big black Great Dane puppy who is slightly obsessed with the trash can...
I have an off an on job managing a restraunt whenever I have a little break from school.
No kids of course, I guess you could say I'm "dating" a few people but nothing serious.
Some of the other things I enjoy are music, I've been playing an instrument since I was 8 and for the last 6 years its been Bass Guitar. Used to play with a band for a number of years and gigged quite a bit, but nothing too in depth lately. Really into cars, especially old muscle cars and such. In the past 5 years or so I've gotten pretty serious about weight lifting and physical fitness types of things.

But enough about me, post up!

I currently attend a MS in Fairfax County Va. I will be a freshman next year and will graduate with an AP diploma. I currently have 3 cats, 2 which are scared of everything but my family, and one (Tony) that thinks hes a dog. I enjoy playing football with my friends and going to parties. I currently play Water polo for DC Polo as a driver and Hull-D. I also swim competievely for the Victor portion of SDS year round and during the summer for the Fairfax Frogs. This summer i hope to make it to ZONES in my 100 and 200 LCM backstroke (1:09.29 and 2:28.59) and the 50, 200, 400, and 800 LCM freestyle (28.09, 2:12.89, 4:40.19, and 9:38.69).

Just visited your web site your tattoo work is awesome!!Have you seen Indonesian Demons?I want that for a tattoo and two snakes on my shoulder blades watching my back.I still have to design it.I like the skull spade tattoo with the goat horns in the background, and the dragons are kool.except I want snakes.

idiotjeff Sep 22, 2004 10:53 AM

bigworm-

I have seen indonesian demons they are great looking, infact that is some of my favorite art. thanks for all the compliments on my work. as far a designing a tattoo goes- you, unless you really want to, need not do the designing, infact it is better left to the artist most of the time. just bringing your ideas and as much pics and info as you can is usually the best way to go. a good tattoer will have a much better idea of how to draw and layout a tattoo on your body so that it flows with the structure of the body. its not enough to merely stamp a picture onto a person, that is seldom the best looking tattoo. all of the tattoos on my site were designed and drawn by myself based on the ideas/wishes of the client. if you live locally (the SF bay area) or wish to travel, I would love to work with you to get you a really nice custom tattoo.
take care, jeff

I used to live in honolulu as well, manoa, and palolo valley to be specific. I used to surf mostly kaisers and bowls, as well as the rest of that area a little.

biggworm Sep 22, 2004 08:37 PM

I totally see what you mean, about leaving the design to the tattoo artist!!!I used to live in Montery,by Santa Cruz so I'm always up there visiting my mom.I'll take you up on that offer one day.I grew up in Waikiki and Diamond Head area.My friend owned THE MARKETPLACE DELI right next door to the coffee shop in Manoa Valley,I managed that place for my friend for five years.SMALL WORLD BRADDAH.HANG LOOSE HAOLI BOY!!

idiotjeff Sep 24, 2004 11:20 AM

hahaha!!!!! its been a few years since anyone called me haoli, almost kind of comforting. I heard that daily in stevenson intermediate and Roosevelt high. F***KING HAOLI!!! WHAT? jeff gets in another fight.ha! I never really had any more trouble at the beach though. I had respect for my elders (and largers) plus i pretty much only surfed kaisers and bowls, bowls less though, so guys got to know me. plus my pops surfed there too and hung out with the guys in the parking lot after work etc. those were the best BBQ's. I miss the food in hawaii.

I spearfish in monterey and carmel a couple times a month.

you are welcome to come check out the shop in mountain view any time you want if you're up visiting. you dont even need to get tattooed-just talk story
aloha, jeff

tegu21 Sep 23, 2004 06:33 PM

hey jeff

I was wondering if you could make a complicated picture with a mixture of snowboarding with snow jumps and a snowboarder performing a jump and a surfer surfing under him with a barrel behind him with a blood python wrapped around it some how make it work around a tribal banded around my arm tattoo that I already have which is blue not black like you usually see? does this make any sense?

idiotjeff Sep 24, 2004 11:10 AM

hi, it would be possible to do all of this except for the adding it to the tribal part. covering the tribal would be an option though. the tattoo you are talking about would need to be no smaller than a half-sleeve in order for the detail not to be overwhelming and cause the tattoo to become a muddy mess over time. because the art isnt on paper (skin) one should consider the constant sloughing off and regeneration of skin cells which causes a tattoo with to much detail crammed into a small area to become unreadable over time. readability is important. it is a neat idea though. and one that would work well, done right.

if this is something you would like to do feel free to contact me privately.
thanks, jeff

googo151 Sep 22, 2004 02:22 AM

Ahh that dreaded BIO! LOL! No kidding! I think it's a great idea for us to get to know something about our fellow blood-men, and women.

Well for starters, I'm 43 years young and getting younger by the 26th of November. Get it? Wink wink. At any rate, I developed my voracious interest with herps sometime ago, in the year 1973, there about, and have not lost interest since. I'm still going strong and don't plan on giving up anytime soon.

I live in Wiilliamsburg Brooklyn, N.Y., and share my apartment with my soon to move in girl friend, and my little man, Dylan; a 13 year old APBT. He's the cutest. I work as a photographer and photo assistant, to some of the top shooters in New York, and have worked with the likes of Micheal Jackson, Mariah Carey, Robert Deniro, etc. on photo shoots. I love what I do!

I am also, a salsa and latin jazz musician part time. I play flute and percussion (Timbales etc.) and work with the Joe Cuba Sextext, when the band is together and not on hiatus as we are now. However, there are some things in the works for me, and you might be chatting with the Next Village People member, playing the part of the Indian, if all goes well. LOL! I was offered a part time gig to work with the Village People; I am keeping my fingers crossed. I know some of you remember the VP!

Anyhow, I also, maintain a small group of Chondro's, of the Biak type, and one Wamena type. He's a beauty. I'll have to post some pictures of him/her sometime in the near future. And who can forget the Bloods and short-tails, that are so much a big part of my life and help to keep me grounded, if you can believe that. There are some other critters rounding out the managerie: a Leopard gecko, one Whites tree frog, one Sonora gopher snake, and lastly, a pair of baby Okeetee corn snakes that I just received from a friend as a gift at the White Plains show, last week.
That's me in a nut-shell. Oh! did I mention that I do a mean Micheal Jackson impression and won $150, 2 weeks ago. LOL!

Oh Crap here we go LOL. My name is Kevin I am 30 years old I am VERY happily married father to 2 (Kyle ,3 and Elisabeth 3 months today) I have been into reptiles for 11 years, introduced to them by a friend but have always loved animals in general. My collection is to numerous to type especially for me as I am a rotating equipment specialist not a typist. I have snakes(50) lizards(27) turtles(4) dogs (3)cats(1)rabbits(4). I have a sickness I am thinking of getting rid of some of my stuff and un-deversifing my collection. My kids take up alot of time and family comes first in my book. My other hobbies are RC cars, antique cars and I also have fish tanks. Luckily for me my wife is fantastic the best there is cause she helps me on those long work weeks and travel weeks. I love music of all kinds and tatoos . Oh and I live in Chicago Area. I guess that is all I will bore you with now

My name is Kara...I'm 28 as of today (9/22), and my career is working with reptiles. Extremely involved with a fabulous guy who is also a reptile nut & my best friend. NERD is a full-time job, on top of which I also maintain a personal collection of 130 snakes give or take, most of which are blood & short-tail pythons.

I love good food, cheap beer, country music & singing the blues. I love to cook & explore new recipes...as well as feed them to my friends - entertaining is a fun thing & a great way to enjoy downtime. My hobbies are field herping (when I get the chance), reading & writing (mostly short-stories & poetry), and "doing my hair" - on a mission to grow it to 48", currently at 36". I'm also in the gym an average of 5 days a week to blow off some steam.

2 cats & the cutest peach face lovebird known to man (a fact that is open neither to debate nor discussion) make up the non-herp faction of our household, with plans to add a Doberman Pinscher, black-capped caique & hopefully a rose-breasted cockatoo over the next few years.

And that's all she wrote!

I used to have long hair back in High School but mine was really silky and extremely blond so my biggest problem was getting girls to not play with it.. didn't bother me much it was just constant ..but now its short and I have to put crap in it or it just kinda floats around.. Kinda wish I never cut it but after I got earrings.. it was getting a little much

Hey,

Jordan -- I think this is a super idea, especially since this board is such a nice community! I love reading about what everyone does for a living and hobbies -- who would have guessed there'd be so many surfers?

As for me . . . Well, I'm not a surfer I'm 18, a freshman in college (Keene State for now); spent half a semester in art school, since art is one of my passions, but my heart lies with biology so that's what i had to persue. I hope to someday become a herp vet or some other sort of herpetological researcher.

I live in NH, as you might have guessed, with my boyfriend and two other roommates. Also two cats (my wonderful Persian and their LOUD Siamese), three goldfish, two pet rats (plus babies), a GIGANTIC African Bullfrog named Bubba, my three short-tails, Burm, Ball python and little Kenyan sand boa. I also breed different color morphs of hamsters, of all things, so I've got about a zillion of those (I love hamsters . . . They're so cuddly!) Eventually I plan to breed my red bloods together and start a blood breeding project. My dream blood morph is the clown stripe, which is why I have to wrap up this post to go look at the clown stripe pics just posted on this forum!

PS. I type really fast, and therefore too much.

hey people

I'm 17 and living here in Spartanburg Co South Carolina...graduating from high school this coming May so that's cool and I hope to major in architecture at Tulane in New Orleans. I've got a job at the library shelving the books (woo fun!)....it keeps me from going broke esp after I spent way too much time at Best Buy over the summer buying CDs...oh and there was that guitar (Ovation Celebrity) I bought in May cos I was feeling sad and comfort food wasn't working

guitar! I love to play the guitar! I've been playing since I was 12 and I'm pretty darn good if I do say so myself (and I'm not the only one; all of my friends say I kick a$$) and I've written some pretty cool music...I wanna be the next Frank Lloyd Wright/Billy Corgan

ooh and I like to write also and they say I kick a$$ at that as well
and once in a while, I'll break out the ole acrylics and canvas and paint myself a masterpiece!
and I absolutely love to listen to music...mostly I listen to Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson, and NIN....but I'm also a big fan of Avril Lavigne, Natalie Merchant, Coldplay, Fiona Apple, the Stones, David Bowie...and lots more....
yeah some say I'm a Renaissance man, man...

and my pets! I've got one blood python (the most coolest kickassingest snake ever!) and I hope to get a Borneo at a show in October...I've also got a corn snake, a ball python, three adult pet/breeder rats and however many babies they have right now, a fish, three box turtles, three snapping turtles, a mud turtle, a softshell turtle, and Beowulf, the amazing sheltie-something mix

and my mom's totally cool with all of the animals...
When she was a kid, her room was full of salamanders, frogs, rabbits (right now she has around 15 rabbits), fish, and other assorted animals...my grandma was terrified and never went in there heh

anyway...now you know some stuff about me

hope I'm not boring

Sigh, i should have gone first.

Well, not much to say. Im 18, i live in denmark. Still living at home. Mostly because my parents wont let me move out without taking my herps with me. However i do have the entire basement to myself which is sweet cause it leaves me lots of room for herps.

Ive taken this year off school to work and make some money. Ill be going to college next year studying political science.

I love reading pretty much anything i can get my hands on and as of late have tried writing some. I play football at least 3-4 times a week (thats soccer to you yanks). I enjoy spending endless hours playing with my PC, seeing what kind of trouble i can get myself into and then spending an hour nagging one of geeky friends to come over and fix it.

I first got into herps some 5 years ago now when i had just turned 13. Pretty much had to bully my mother into letting me get a corn snake hehe. A healthy allowance and a part time job in a pet store that kept reptiles when i turned 15 has afforded me a decent collection (by my standards) and a fair amount of expirience (well i think so anyway).
Ill be trying to breed my BCC couple next march, probably gonna fail as well but i figure what the hell.

Hello my name is Jody, and I am a Bloodoholic. I am a 46 year old male and even though I have tried to put down the bloods, I just can't seem to let go all the way. I have a cajun wife and a perfect red headed son that puts up with me. I have done so many things is my life it would be hard to list them all, but animals have always played an important role. In order, my loves would be; my family, friends, animals, the country, and my motorcycle. I am old enough to know that the best things in life come from the heart, and that true friendship is priceless. jody

My name is Carole, and I've been attending for....oh wait...wrong meeting!

Hmm, I've posted so much off topic stuff that I don't know if I have anything new to add!

I'm a 20 yr old college student that has found a new life for myself at Kansas State University-Salina. And yes, Kansas does suck as horribly as you might have imagined. "Land of Ahhs" my a$$
I'm studying aviation, and am currently working on my commercial pilot's license. After graduation I would honestly love to move to Africa and work as a bush pilot, or perhaps at a wildlife reserve..or basically anything that will allow for me to spend my days outdoors, adding another adventure to my life.

I don't really have much in the way of extracurricular activities, due to me not having any freakin time for any. Hang gliding has become a cherised activity, but my car put a rather quick end to that! I'm a drummer at heart, but once again, have trouble finding time to do so much as run through a few warm ups.

My true love however, lies with my friends. I love them all to pieces and find them amazingly beautiful in their individuality. I don't really have my 'natural born' family, but I consider myself blessed to have found my own family out here at college. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories..life is just so crazy!

First borneo stp was a rescue and have not kicked the addiction since. Currently have seven stp and another 40 critters include birds, warmblooded's, monitors, various pythons including GTP, Burmese, boa, balls, angolan (my fav!) and carpet along with the occasional colubrid.

I do educational talks and presentations locally at museums and other major public venues pro bono and love it!

Been keeping herps all my life, but it wasn't until I got to college that I realize you could actually buy them! First exotic was a ball python 15yrs ago and haven't stopped since.

As if anyone really wants to know but here goes.

Been around animals most of my 50 years. Dang am I really that old? First bred Burms back in '79 when little to now info was available. Pretty much had to adults and they did what came natural, I knew females would "incubate" their own eggs and there was no such thing as a sweater tub or hovabator. Besides when a 12' female lets you know that she's keeping her eggs you listen. :0

Currently own a "dreaded" pet shop. I say that for how often pet shops get flamed on these boards. I do try to take the best care of our animals that I possibly can. We're mostly a herp and aquarium shop run by my darling wife and myself. A lot of work but we can't find an employee that really wants to do any real work like cleaning cages. Found plenty that like to stand around posing though. LOL

While the shop is my latest "profession" and herps have been a hobby I was a carpenter for most of my life. Still make custom cabinetry type enclosures for herps but not much else to do with carpentry, 'cept what needs to be done for the shop and home.

Rosie, the wife is an incurable pet a holic, who really needs a 12 step program, so our home is full of all sorts of critters. Like we really need that with the shop.

Even with my background in animals/herps I find there is always more to learn which is why I lurk a lot in these forums and post when I think I can be of help. When I stop learning it's because I'm dead.

Current inventory at home too numerous to mention, herps consist of my Dums, BRBs, Beardies and Mali Uros. Rosie has an enormous Rococco toad, Fatso, who loves to watch T.V. I do have a gorgeous, blond Borneo STP at the shop who thinks she's a bottomless pit. She's a total baby and ticklish as all get out.

Well enough of this boring crap about me, time to go get some edumacatin'

Well, my life's quite boring at the moment - no time for hobbies and such. I work a few jobs; at a vet, a pathology lab, and doing research in astronomy. I was an astrophysics grad student in MN and was forced to take some time off due to health reasons. Anyway, after some thinking, I decided to try veterinary school instead (though I'm still working off and on at the old dept). So at the moment I'm working like a mad woman to try to catch up on bills that added up when I wasn't able to work and pay for two more pre-reqs before I can apply to vet school.

Besides that, I have my pair of bloods that I'm planning on breeding next year, and quite a few ball pythons, including some hatchlings and eggs that are due pretty soon. So I guess my pets are my only hobby at the moment. I also have 2 cats, a Maine Coon with a heart condition (HCM) and a Siamese mix with messed up joints and a pellet in his belly (he was shot before I got him) and a rat breeding colony. It's a good thing I work at a vet and get pet benefits! Oh, and some tarantulas too. So that's about it. Pretty boring, eh? Although, I do take time off work to see some bands once on a while. I need it to keep me sane!

Well I feel like I've been a part of this forum for quite some time although I have never posted. I have found your experience, wisdom, and tips quite helpful in the past. So I guess this would be a perfect chance to introduce myself.

I am 28 years old, married, and have a one-year old boy. He's a treat! I graduated from the Univ of Minnesota, with a degree in biology and anthropology. I work for a biological supply company. We supply schools with organisms for science programs, primarily protozoans and algae.

I have a huge black cat (He's a Freak!), six snakes: a pair of banded Cal Kings (1 normal & 1 albino), a pair of Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons, and a pair of Sumatran Bloods. My wife is not a fan of snakes, but she's semi-tolerant of my habit. I also maintain a small breeding colony of mice and rats.

I also have to agree with all of you...this is the most welcoming forum on this site.

Later,
Bjorn

Just because I have a short attention span doesn't mean

Kara-
Here are a few pics of my bloods (one of each). They are both just over a year old. The female is a few months older, but a bit smaller. She does not feed quite as well as the male.

Here's my gal...

And here's the lucky fella...

Hope you liked 'em-
