Rotating males

Joeycoco98 Sep 21, 2004 08:04 PM

I have to put my second rack system together on weekend soon however I don't want to wait to start breeding my tub of over 20 females. I have started rotating males in and out of the female holding tank. Have any of you ever done this and if so what was your success rate?

Thanks,
Miller

i have to laugh when i and others reply with the answer to your question and others and no one reads others replies to topics below, so i won't state my rate of sucess again. Why don't people read other questions/answers before posting theirs so it doesn't repeat itself???HUHH???

In my experience you will end up with a dead male and no babies. Mice hate change and do best in constant set up. Moving them around will stress them out.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I was concerned about that so I have been checking on the male(s). I figured because it was a tub of about 20 females that it would not be that upsetting. Funny things is one of my older females was half eaten the other day. I don't know if the male killed her of if it was something else, she was twice his size and almost looked like a small rat lol. I put her back in the holding tank of females because she had never bred so I figured she was just old. Anyway, I think I will stop rotating the males as your are suggesting. I have not seen any "action" to date anyway.

Thanks again,
Miller

With mice...you are basically setting up the social structure repeatedly and this is adding stress and greatly increasing the likelihood that someone will get killed and/or eaten. And decreasing the speed with which your girls breed back. Just set mice up in groups with one male per group and go on from there.

If it is rats than that works quite well and you will see that leaving the boy a few days will often result in pregnant girls. I tend to move my male every week or 10 days. Though I have had planned breedings that took 1 hour together.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

Thanks Sonya for the info. I hope to switch to rats as soon as I can get my Florida King to take them. I will not rotate the males anymore,It was temporary until I was able to assemble the pieces of my second rack system.

Regards.

Pardon me, perhaps I missed something. What are you going to do with all these mice?

Well I need the pinkies for my Easterns and any others that make it to adult hood will either to fed to my Florida King or frozen for later use by size.
