How to get them to eat from a cup?

boidsntegus Sep 21, 2004 08:55 PM

My jax doesn't like to eat from a cup. He'll eat right out of my hand, and will hunt them down when they run loose, but never out of his hanging dish (just deep enough for crickets to get out, but not too deep for his tongue at all). Anyway, he just kinda stares at the dish, but won't eat anything directly from it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Can't say as there is a sure-fire way to convince him (or her) to do it. I assume that you hope to cup-feed as a convenience to you, both to minimize bug loss and escape, and maybe better monitor feeding without having to actually see it occur, or hunt for healthy craps. Try a broader, and likely shallower, type of cup, maybe with an opaque bottom. Will create greater drainage concerns, and maybe more bug escapes, but play with it (the Tupperware or Rubbermaid folks will love you). Or you can bug-proof the cage even more, as free ranging bugs seem to encourage the fastest growing chams. Bo

To tell you the truth, but I'm not sure if it's a rarerity though, but I have been putting about 5 or 6 crickets dusted with the supplements in a cup and putting it out right in frount of my cham. and if he is hungry he will take them right out of the cup.

When i started cup feeding my cham she would eat out of my hand also. I would feed her one from my hand, then offer the cup with my hand. After a while she learned to go to the cup for food, and i would get her to eat one then hang it where she could see. A while after that she would stand by her cup if it was empty, and GLARE at me for more LOL.
I also used the jug method when she was on to larger crix. I used a ketchup jug, cut a flap in the side (keep the flap, you can close it until you hang it to keep the bugs from jumping out) and put a little bit of screen on the far side. Put the lid on and make sure the flap is from right below the neck to halfway down. Crickets tend not to jump out, but up. They are too dumb to get out. They will crawl up and down the screen and you cham can get em. ou can also keep gutload in the bottom of the jug. I found that this worked really well

You wouldn't happen to have a photo of what you are talking about do you? I think I have a pretty good image in my head, but wanna make sure. Sounds like a great idea, I'm gonna try it tonight. I guess the cham snags the crix horizontally while the crix crawl around the screen? Also, I assume the inside of ketchup bottle is too smooth for the crix to crawl on the walls? Thanks for the suggestions.

it is similar to a method by bill strand, or at least that he wrote about i'm not sure. the crix can't walk on the bottle edges, so you can control where they go by placement of the screen
I'll try and find a link for you
