Female Corn and Western Hognose

cornsnakefreak Jun 26, 2003 07:33 PM

Hey,

My friend has a female corn that she bred 4-16, 4-25, and 5-02.
She still hasn't laid her her eggs and we are starting to worry about her health. My female was bred the same time but laid her eggs at the last full moon. Should we take her to the vet? She hasn't gone into pre-lay shed yet and still has a good appetite but it has been over 45 days since she was bred last. Please help. My friend also has a hognose that hasn't eaten for atleast 2 months now. He keeps refusing. What do you guys think she should do? She has tried live, smaller food items, and even putting the snake in a dark room. Nothing works.

Thanks Charlene

Does the corn actually have eggs? Is she gravid?
If she is, then 45 days is fine it can take up to 60 days or so.
Ok now, has your friend tried a toad for the hognose?
toads are their natural prey item.
just a couple of thoughts

Hey,

Yes, she is definatly gravid. There is a lot of swelling in the lower 1/3 of her body. My female that had 14 eggs wasn't even showing signs and look what I got. My female's first clutch was 14 eggs and not to mention my first clutch too! I don't understand why it would take one snake who was bred after my friend's and is smaller laid her eggs on time. Are female corns more likely to lay their eggs on new of full moons? As for the hognose, no she hasn't tried a toad but he was eating 2 or 3 pinks at a time for her for atleast 3 mos. It is like he decided to take a vacation off from eating.

Thanks Charlene

Hi,

You could also try doing a scent transfer. Take a toad or tadpole and rub it on a washed pinkie. That should do the trick. If he does eat a washed pink at least twice, then on the next feeding don't wash the pink but rub the toad/tadpole on it. This should get him back on pinks, assuming the snake is not in shed, temps are good.... I would try scenting first because if you feed a toad/tadpole first the snake MAY prefer toads/tadpoles from then on. Good Luck!!
