Shallow Aquariums

bakeaway Sep 22, 2004 05:31 AM

I house most all of my snakes(5) in 10-20 gallon aquariums,But as i get more animals it is taking alot more vertical space.
Does anyone know of a company that makes shallow aquariums?
I saw some at a show a while back. They looked just like a regular aquarium, but were only about 8-10 inches tall. Thanks.

Here's a different idea and you can use the tanks you already have.

At your local home improvement center LHIC, look for the material for making screen windows. They should have the metal for the rails, corners and the plastic beading for holding the screen in place, you could also pick up the tool for rolling the beading in.

Using wooden or even the plastic outside corner molding, found in the trim dept. cut pieces of trim to make channels that your screens can slide into. Do the two long sides and one end. With the channels you can then lay your tanks on their sides with the top facing front and have sliding screen fronts. The tanks can then be stacked on top of each other making a neat little self contained rack. You may need to add a piece of trim to the back/bottom plastic molding to keep the tanks level. Hope this makes sense.

You could house your animals in clear, polycarbonate boxes. These will be about the same weight as aquaria but much easier to clean due to the rounded bottoms.

The only downfall to these vs. aquaria is that you need to be a bit more careful not to scratch the material.

In the future you could incorporate them into a rack system which would save a lot of husbandry time.

I found a picture recently of a rack built around these boxes. It looked fantastic. Wish I could find it.

LLLReptile.com carries Creative Habitat brand shallow aquariums. I use them and they are great! Then all I had to do was go to home depot and buy the shoe stack shelves and the size I use fits perfectly. Hope this helps,

Only 1 Milksnake right now(stuarti, 4yrs), a Labrador, a Whippet and a senegal parrot. Betta breeding is on the back burner for now!
