When do corns start eating fuzzies?

kb0wwp Sep 22, 2004 11:10 AM

I have a ball python, and my daughter wants a corn snake. I have a big surplus of frozen fuzzies (about 5 grams) and am just curious how old is a corn snake generally when it's big enough to eat mice that size?

Also, how long is it acceptable to keep two corns together? I can get two hatchlings, but I have to take both...

Generally i'm sure you know snakes shouldn't be housed together. However it is commonly done. I wouldn't house two corns together though as babies...they may have a cannibalistic tendency being babies. I would say close to a year to eat a small fuzz, maybe a few more months if they're a bit larger. You could create a divider in the tank if thats a problem - but what I did when I got my two texas bairdi hatchilngs is I went to walmart and got two "reptile ranch" containers. They are 7"x13" and cost about $8. These are very secure, great for hatchlings, and cheap! I heat mine with lighting...they havent complained!

But corns are very interesting snakes...they should be a lot more active than your python.

I agree shouldn't house snakes together. It's stressful for them. As for the fuzzies...depends. My ghost corn was eating fuzzies when he was 6-7 months old. My amel corn was like 7-8 months before she would eat a fuzzie.
A yearling corn should be eating small adult mice. But it depends on the snake. I have a yearling honduran milk that is still eating 2-3 fuzzies.
I've read frozen can last for up to 6 months in freezer if properly packaged.
Just my opinion
