new law as of 9-1-04 in Indiana

A very extensive new set of regulations has been issued for box turtle owners in Indiana.
anyone involved with box turtles in this state would be wise to go to the D.N.R. site as the regs go way beyond what we could discuss here.
If you see a box turtle in the wild in Indiana, run the other way or you could be in trouble with the green guys.
remember when this was fun?

What about habitat destruction? Are DNR folks on-scene to write citations for all box turtles plowed under?

That my friend is the real problem.
our fine state has a way of putting a bandaid on an amputated limb.
we do live in a free society, supposedly and land owners have a right to do with their land as they please.
however it is up to us to educate as many as we can about proper habitat and conservation.
The D.N.R. has no sollutions but it has to spend its budget somewhere so we are the path of least resistance.
we need to put our money where our hearts are and for all who can, purchase habitat and put it in trust much the same way an org. like Ducks Unlimited does.
even if you dont agree with all of what they do, the own wildlife habitat and they improve it.
and guess what, they grow lots of ducks !!!!
This group(reptile folks) needs to get together before its all gone!!!!
and no i dont care if that was spelled correctly for all of the folks who need a life.

I wonder what "sufficient documentation" consists of for getting the permit. Pictures of my turtles from 20 years ago? Unfortunately I don't think I have pics of myself with the turtles from back then to prove how old the pictures are; the only way to tell is that the turtles are wearing friendship pins and Transformers T-shirts.

I wonder why the permit must be renewed annually. I can think of some pretty creative things to put into the required annual report.

evidently, not in kansas ( or the last i heard ). Even with our " sinc " specie of timber rattlesnakes, it doesn't cover a den sight from being plowed under or bulldozed over. That's what gets me @! I can't legally have one for educational display or educational topics at schools/town events to educate the general public on the specie as to what a timber looks like to stop the wanton killing of other snakes to what people thinks rattlesnakes even are out here , but.......

May I breed box turtles?

No, box turtles may not be bred in Indiana. Captive breeding of box turtles can have detrimental affects on wild box turtle populations:

But you can import all the wild-caught ones from other states you want. LOL
