WC and parasites

trinacliff Jun 26, 2003 08:14 PM

In light of what Carlton said down below when we were talking about possible reasons this one R. Brev of mine is not doing well, it got me thinking. If she does not make it, how do I know if it was because of parasites or not? If that is determined or suspected, do I need to clean out and disinfect my entire enclosure? That would mean digging up the eggs that were deposited, so I would need to do it soon (since they were laid a week ago). Also, does that mean I should have my remaining two treated for parasites???

Thanks so much!
Kristen

Although parasites are not a good thing for any animal to have they are usually not a problem if the animal has proper husbandry and is not experienceing any great deal of stress. I very rarely treat for parasites in any of the fresh wildcaughts I get until they have been with me a few months and are acclimated, hydrated and eating well. The only time I really treat for parasites in fresh WCs is as a last chance effort to try and save an animal that is on it's last leg.

A very large portion of parasites are unable to be transferred into a developing embryo inside an egg. As far as I know all of your common chameleon parasites can not.
