Rubbermaid 2221s & Rack Systems

CJBianco Sep 22, 2004 02:02 PM

Hello Everyone,

Since most of my money was spent on snakes, I just don't seem to have enough to purchase a rack system from Jason or Boaphiles. That being said, I'll probably build my own this weekend from melamine shelves purchased at my local Lowes. I've already ordered some Rubbermaid model 2221 containers (23x16.75x6) and I'm wondering how these sized containers fair for Ball Pythons. If these snakes ('04s) will outgrow these containers in the next 6 months, I may just scrap the rack idea and chalk up my Rubbermaid 2221 expenses to a lesson learned.

Any ideas, comments, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Chris

Those should be good for about 2-3 years. I keep mine in that size tib until they reach about 5 pounds

Firstly, whatever the reason for building your own racks, it's a great idea; 1. way cheaper, 2. Have it built to your EXACT dimensions, and, 3. Way cheaper. I'm currently rebuilding all my racks over to 2221's. I USED to house my adult balls in the underbed 34x17x6's but they're just too big. I've decided to disassemble those racks as most of the larger balls that I have in there refuse to eat. I've seen some breeders keep their full-sized adult females in these for the whole season. Good luck.

Yes. It does seem a lot cheaper. I can get the 24"x18" shelves measured and cut at Lowes, and putting it all together seems a snap. However...I've already purchased two T-Rex 11"x11" Cobra Heat Pads at $25 each. Now I've got to figure out how to incorporate these so I didn't waste $50. I'm thinking I may need to put rails/spacers on the shelves. Either that or glue little round half-marble sized feet on the corners of the tubs so they'll slide in easily and be raised a bit. Decisions...decisions...

Ummm, yeah, you wasted your money, sorry. If you wanted to build your own racks to save money, then you HAVE to use heat tape, as UTH's are a STOOPID priced. You're gonna blow your budget if you use UTH's to heat your bins. One UTH is $25 (that's the equivalent of 8 feet of heat tape, or 5 racks side-by-side) and you bought 2? that's 10 bins' worth of heat tape and only 2 bins UTH heat. Did you keep the receipt?....

Yep. Receipt in hand. I was up all night justifying the purchase of one of Jason's racks. I'm going to splurge. I'm sure I won't regret it.

..specimens up to about 2000 gm (about 4.5 pounds), then go with the larger boxes. Specimens near that size (1800-2200 gm) may feed better in one or the other, so sometimes it takes experimenting.

Do the Rubbermaid 2221 boxes have a ridge on the bottom edge, or are they perfectly flat? If they're raised a bit (ridges), I could set the boxes straight on top of the heat pads and there'd still be a slight space between the pad and the box. If not, I guess I'll stick to my last plan of glueing little feet onto the bottom corners of the boxes.

Thanks for the Info,
Chris

Yeah, I thought that, too. Then I read a post from earlier this year (while searching keywords) from someone who says the 2220s and 2221s are back into production. His supplier told him the news. Anyway, I did a quick search on the internet and there are bunches of places to buy them. Who knows?
