Indiana bans ALL box turtles as pets

cornsnakes Sep 22, 2004 03:53 PM

well O.k. if you have some you have had since before 9-1-04 you can apply for a permit and have your boxies pit tagged.
it is against the law for your turtles to mate in Indiana and for anyone to release boxies in Indiana or little russia as it should be called.
you can give them away as long as the person has the permits.
dont even think about collecting from the wild.
we herpers are the easiest targets and the D.N.R. has to spend their bugets somewhere.
for anyone who knows anything about wild poppulations of animals, it is ignorant to think herpers are the culprits in the decline of this species.
habitat destruction is where its at folks.
I know some of you will have a cow about this, however off road vehicles have caused a hugh decline in our area.
along with high shopping centers everywhere.
Check oy the I.D.N.R. web site and see for your self.
Chris

Is anything being done to fight this pit tag protocol? I hope nothing like this makes it to my area.

I live in Ohio and the pit tag issue is a fricking mess. The regulators don't have the balls to stop developers but like to play tough guy with the average Joe who may have a few box turtles.

I've attached a link to the site about the illegally of keeping and breeding box turtles in Indiana.
It is so strict, that it is illegal to keep two box turtles in the same enclource!!
The DNR does not want anyone to breed box turtles! No longer can they be kept as pets.
The DNR can make laws as they please. They are not governed by any other state agency. They don't have to answer to any polical body except themselves.
If they want to pass a law, saying it is illegal to own a reptile, any reptile, all they have to do, is write the law, and then just simply enforce that law. And as herpers, we have no say in the matter at all.
They have public fourms, for public input, but as we see, that input is disregarded if it doesn't fall on thier side of issues.

Hi, Ohio is pretty bad too and getting worse. You gotta remember that it's easier to ban something than regulate. DNR don't know a box turtle from a paper bag. So instead of learning herps and regulating them, it's just easier to ban them.
