What's your current inventory? I'm up to 65 snakes and...(PIC)

carl3 Sep 22, 2004 04:38 PM

...growing. Today was a great day! I crossed off two more snakes on my 'wish list' and couldn't be happier. I swore I wasn't going to add more snakes but I just couldn't help myself.lol. I just picked up a male ball python 100% het for piebald and a pair of Caulker Cay boas, which are not much bigger than a baby corn snake.lol. Anyway, I've been super busy with teaching and will not have a free moment to photograph anything until a break so I'm sorry for teasing w/out posting pics. I added way too many snakes this season and its only going to get more crowded. I'm moving soon and will have 2200 sq feet of herp room space with dedicated heating/plumbing. The move itself will also keep me VERY busy. Anyway, I'm sure there are many others out there who have added snakes recently or since the last post of this nature. Therefore, what's your current inventory?

Well I just started a few months ago, so I've only got a Snow and Amel Corn so far. But there is a show this weekend, and their predicting it's going to be the biggest on ever in Canada. I live in Calgary, and that's where it's taking place. So I know i'm coming home with a few more roommates. Will let you guys know how it goes.

repzoo44 Sep 22, 2004 07:57 PM

Im trying to sell some of the hatchlings and one is loose in the house. Ive sold 3 so far but its going kind of slow. I also have a bearded dragon. I think my signature breaks down the snakes I have. We also just adopted a 3 legged cat so that brings us to 6 cats. I dont have any more room for snakes but I do plan on getting a few more this year. It really is a sickness. LOL

I just "remember" what I have.... so... here's what I remember:

Cornsnakes:
The Boys
Hermes: Normal Striped het Anery Het Amel and I'm beginning to think he came out of okeetee lines, as two of his offspring when crossed with a reverse okeetee are developing very thick borders and looking very classic okeetee.
Zeus: Hurricane snow motley
Sebastian: Anery
Cornelius: Normalsicle
The girls:
Aphrodite supposedly normal het motley, so far I know for sure she's normal het "snow" but not sure on the motley.
Athena is anery striped.
Hera is a very light colored Anery
Cleo is a creamsicle
The babies
Hope: reverse okeetee
Jumanji: okeetee (lookeetee)
Striker: normal stripe het anery (pos. het amel)
plus 3 non-feeders

California Kingsnakes
The boys:
Bishop - High white
Jester - Aberrant Banded Desert
The Girls
Licorice - Desert Banded
Queenie - Dot-Dash - black and yellow
Euphrates - aberrant banana
Tigris - aberrant banana
Pegasus - Albino aberrant
Chocolatte - milk chocolate and pale yellow
The babies all aberrant banded/striped
Conundrum, Zipper (keeper), Tiny (keeper), Mini, Puny, Quagga, Zebra, and Zerkyl.

Other Kingsnakes
Pandora - Apalachicola
Yertyl - Pandora's daughter, also apalachicola
Augusta - Desert King
Lady - Pyro Pyro
The Tramp - Pyro Pyro
Tarzan - Florida King
Xena - Florida King
Delilah - Florida King

Other Snakes
Bengal - Jurassic Milk
Lucille - Ball python
Mrs. Sippy - Ball python
Siberia - Ball Python
Harold - Ball Python

AND... I think that is it... I also have 1.1 cats, 1.0 hubby, 0.1 stepdaughter living with us, 1.1 stepkids living with their mother, and one pool vacuum named Virgil.

The kids love the snakes, and want to hold them EVERY day. AND they want to watch them eat every day! We had to have three votes before we finally settled on names. Four of the top choices for name for the male snake were: Abalamahalamatandra, Parangaricutirimicudro, Rocky, and Cornelius. Female names were easier, it was close between Sunshine and Cleo, and finally they were dubbed Cornelius and Cleo. Other kids with snakes are bringing them in to live for a few days in my classroom, and it's inspired such an increase in the attention span of the students. You wouldn't guess, but having snakes in a high school math class CAN be very beneficial. Sometimes we take a few moments for the animals instead of Geometry, and the kids love to take those time-outs and are SO focused when we return to the math, it's great!

It's a great feeling to have the attention of the students. I am extremely blessed to have several wonderful groups of students, they are so dynamic, and I consider myself very lucky to be their teacher. From time to time I remember my own high school years and the impact some of my teachers had on me, and transfer that to my own students and remember that I could be having an impact on their whole lives by giving them a love of snakes and of course, of math!

Thanks again, Kathy, for the opportunity to bring these guys in as permanent classroom pets.

Our alligator is named Snuggles and she is 3 ft. long. We keep her in a large container in our living room where she is quite content to watch movies with my boyfriend. She often "talks" to him, making small throaty calls. She only does this to him and gets quite offended and hostile if I touch him where she can see. She seems to enjoy movies with alligators or crocadiles such as Lake Placid and will talk to the TV as well as practicing any moves she sees on her next mouse. She's very easy to handle and very friendly to people (in the non-biting, alligator-nice sense). She wants to eat our ferrets however and does try to rush her cage side whenever they our out and about. She loves going to the flea market with us where we set her up in an aquarium for everyone to see (with a lid of course). Learning to sex her was a "fun" experience. My friend was teaching me while his wife and my boyfriend watched. I accidentally pressed the wrong direction and got peed on. Its been quite the joke around her ever since. (Maybe thats why she wants to take my man. Alligator revenge? hmmm...) Well feel free to contact me with any more questions or visit my website to see some pics. Thanks,
Sera

6 adults and 13 hatchlings, all cornsnakes. (Although only a few of those hatchlings are keepers.) I also have 8 eggs incubating, though I think only 7 are still good.

I keep telling myself I will get something else, but I never do. Next year I've promised myself I will get a different species. Just what though I've yet to decide. One of these though: an olive house snake, a taiwan beauty, a blue beauty, a western hognose, some sort of sand boa, or a rosy boa.

Here are the photos of all of them (some have already been posted here though):

All the hatchlings:

Darin Chappell Sep 27, 2004 04:17 PM

I finally got the point that I had to make a decision as to whether this would remain a hobby of interest, or a labor of love. The shipping inconsistencies I faced in my particular region actually made the decision for me.

Because I simply could not reliably ship hatchlings each year, and there were not enough widely attended shows at which I could readily sell my animals, I simply could not put the time, effort, and money into building a business built upon such shaky foundations.

So, since this was to be a hobby, I kept a few breeding projects that interested me, and sold the rest. I may or may not jump back into the middle of things someday, but the shipping capacities will have to improve greatly before I could do too much.

Thanks for asking about me! Take care --

for me, but I always try to remind myself that I don't have to breed everything each year, which I think can be difficult for some people to grasp (not in any way referring to you...just thinking outloud regarding my logic/philosophy).

Plus, I always figured I could wholesale some stuff if worse comes to worse with regards to overflow of hatchlings. I only plan to breed a few snakes each year anyway, and not all are corns. Plus, I have no shipping woes here but things can always change.

Well, it was good to hear your personal experience, which I add to my bank of informtaion to learn from. I bet it was one heck of a tough decision.

OMG! How do ya'll find the time for that many!!! I only have four snakes and have to hold myself back from buying more, more and more. Watch out when the kids are grown or when I retire!

I have:

1 normal corn (easiest to care for)
1 ball python (can you say attitude!)
1 baby common redtail boa (so sweet)
1 Dumerils boa (gorgeous animal!!)
2 voracious children....needing way too much care. LOL
1 husband who has never grown up
1 dobie/shepherd mix and
the queen of the house, my pride and joy, 1 nine month old golden retriever

Really my priorities are not that out of whack.

I spend 5 hours minimum per week feeding and cleaning them all. (sometimes its a 7 hour ordeal if I have snakes that decide to be picky eaters that week). Its really nice though b/c its 5 hours when I don't think about anything else in the world. I can just zone out and submerge myself into my 'hobby'. I really enjoy photographing them and showing them off to people but its not too often anymore. I am really careful now too since less time with each snake equals out to more aggressive snakes. All the more reason to keep a clear mind while working with these fascinating animals.

just follow through the post if you want to see the pics, but I'll include a pic of my volcano here just for fun
