I have recently faced some confusion on this issue,the pr of smooths we just got have been in turmoil as we have had conflicting views on what they realy are....any easy way to tell?

Depending on the size of the caiman,you can look at threir eye color and how long their snout is.Also on smoothfronts their tail is much wider at the base and the tail is shorter in lebgth compared to the dwarf,The top scales on the tail stick out as opposed to up.You should look at the paleosuchus page.It has a lot of good info.

The scutes on the back of the Cuviers will be nice straight lines with very little deviation. The Smooth Front's scutes will be rather haphazard, and not in straight lines at all. There's a lot of scalation differences... Here's the CITES Croc ID guide:
