is it ok to have no heat on if the room temp is suitable ?

zawakees Jun 26, 2003 08:49 PM

my bp's cage is at 30 C, without any additional heat source. i have a heating lamp and a UTH, but as soon as i turn the lamp on, the temp rises over 30 C ! is that ok ?

The whole secret to keeping reptiles successfully is giving them a choice of temperatures. Keeping it at an ambient does not give the animal a choice at which to thermoregulate.

Wrong way to keep your animal and sure recipe for failure. Change it immediately.

what do you do if when you add heat to one side and it's gets over heated throughout the entire tank....

scottmac Jun 26, 2003 09:32 PM

turn the heat down

zawakees Jun 26, 2003 09:32 PM

that's what i meant ! if i add heat it'll surely go over 35 C, is tat ok ?

thx for the help

Use a UTH, it does not increase ambient that much.

i ment the same thing...don't want it gettin up to 100 degrees because someone says there should be a heat source on at all times....during the day in the room i have the snake in,the tank temp gets to 92-95 night gets between 75-85....so i turn the heat sources off completly, how is this wrong?

I think Jeff meant that the snake needs a choice. If the entire room and tank is that hot the snake can't regulate and get cooler. That is a lot of stress and a cooked snake. You need a situation that the snake can choose to get to 90 something or can choose to sit at 77, or whatever. Keeping him overall too warm is not right.

Don't know if that is okay or not. My two adults tend to sit at the cold end which is closer to 75 Where does your's sit? If he is on the hot end he may want more temp or not....see what he does and then adjust.

ok so how hot is too hot....usually 90-95 right? how can i cool off one side if they are both in that range

babysdaddy85 Jun 26, 2003 11:42 PM

My hotest point is about 93, and my bp stays their most of the time. My coldest is 80 day, and 76 night. I cant think of a good way to cool off the room, exept air conditioning, where is your snakes cage at?

mmellott Jun 27, 2003 02:46 PM

the cage is in my room right on the same desk as the computer...he likes to sit n watch me when i'm on the computer...y ya ask?

Is there a cooler place in the room? Without being in a draft obviously. But I keep my 'herp' room about 75-80 max.constant.(one of the reasons I went to the cellar with it was to better control seasonal fluxuations) Then you can make a hot end and the cool end is room ambient...or so.

I keep my BP's in a room that is heated and that's it! They have no other heat source!! This includes winter!!! Not saying it's best for all, but it must be right!!! I've produced a little over 200 eggs in 3 years!! All are healthy and the majority feed right thru the winter. Mabye the is some sort of gradient going on, but I don't know never had checked it out. My thermostats always shut the room down when the room gets above 85 after all there are no hotspots in the jungle........
