A good example of why hatchling colors mean nothing when dealing with Cresteds.

I just stumbled onto this when I was going through my photos. I figured some of those who are new to Crested Geckos would find this interesting.

This one started off very dark, but within several weeks, she started to turn tan and then orange at about 3-4 months.

Here she is at one day old.

Here she is at 6 months old.

Anthony,

I just have to say that I am very impressed with you.

You are obviously a very experienced keeper, and breeder as well.

You ALWAYS answer peoples questions, whether they are directed at you or not.

In this post you say "I figured some of those who are new to Crested Geckos would find this interesting." This is really great. This is considerate, and shows that you love the critters as well.

I just wanna say,
Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words.

Honestly, I've only been working with Cresteds for two years, so it's not hard for me to remember the days when I didn't know what was what.

Is sexual maturity when the colors stop changing so much? I have seen some radical changes up until that point. But very few of mine are at that point so my ''database'' is very small.

I had thought so, but one of my adult males, Harley, from Dragon's Den, who had always been red and orange (except during the day when I was able to find him, shades of gold and brown), turned silver and shades of grey one day when I had him at a reptile exhibit. Absolutely blew me away!!

Is it because he's on a white background? Mine does that too because he hides in these white silk plants during the day then turns absolutely black and rust at night especially when he's hungry :D

Do cresteds have some color vision??

That's a good question, but no, we were outside of a pet store (colorful store-window displays and posters) where they let us exhibit (and educate & promote) once per month, and I had a fellow-herper hold a sheet of paper behind him just to make him easier to pick out. He was already those silver/grey shades before we came up with the white paper. He'd never done it before or since. (If I'm ever in that situation again, I think I'll try different colors of paper, just for curiosity's sake.) I think they DO have a sense of color, since in the evening when they become active is when they are at their best. (Although I've never noted any of my males passing the less-colorful females by...)I'm attaching Harley's baby picture showing his normal coloring.
