Feeding dishes and water cups.

drkfantasy Sep 23, 2004 09:11 AM

One of the great things about cresteds is compared to other reptiles they arent alot of work .
However ..perhaps because of that or because they are easy to breed I cant help but notice how many people end up with 12-18 or more of them .
A small thing perhaps but one of the more time consuming is the feeding and clean up of thier dishes .
After a little trial and error Ive found what I like and seems to work best for me.Thought Ild share ..
Food dish 1/2 clam or seashell .. they are scoop shaped look pretty good in the cage .have no corners to make it difficult to get food out of. Each night I drop the old one into a gallon jug of water and wash them all with hot water the next morning the food just rinses off .No fuss at all.Theres no expense like the throw away cups, no rust like babyfood tops and it doesnt get any easier to wash they sink to the bottom for soaking and have no corners for food to stick too.
Water dish- For this Ive found the plastic twist off caps work great. They are too small across for even the smallest crested to fall in and drown , they are too small too mess the cage up if they are tipped ,are tall enough and small enough crickets dont seem to find thier way in and drown on a wholesale scale.and are free with the soda none of us should drink but most do .

A silly little post ,but some may find it useful.

What a great idea, but where do you obtain seashells (unless you live on a coast)? What I ended up doing is stopping by a potter's shop and asking a woman to form some small, shallow, high-glaze "plates" for me. I asked for them in pastel colors so I could tell at a glance whether the food had been cleaned up. Most of them are round, but a few are sort-of squared-rounds, if that makes sense. Many of them are only about 2" in diameter which is perfect for kritter keepers with hatchlings. I think she only charged me $2. apiece, and they are surprisingly sturdy and break-resistant. Also, after a few minutes soak, they clean with a rinse.

i've been using glass tea light holders from a 99 cent store... i got 4 for 99 cents and they are great... they are heavy for larger rhacs like leachianus and chahoua... but are still shallow enough that i use them with my young cresteds... anyway... just another idea-paul

I actually bought a few colored glass candle plates from "Walgreens" first, but the color started flaking off after a few washings so I got worried that whatever that "paint" was would harm the geckos. Just because glass LOOKS gold or purple doesn't mean it is.

I use soya sauce dishes, the ones for sushi. I bought the smooth/clay-porcalin ones not the plastic
they're about 75 cents each CND.
You can get very pretty ones, they're smooth therefore easy to clean and heavy enough to not move too much. Mealies also have a tougher time getting out.
