Wow, I never had my name on the title of a thread before! Actually, I'm concerned. She hasnt laid yet and just flat out doesnt look good. She spends all day either laying on the soil or roosting very low in her trees. She doesnt go near the sand/coconut fiber bucket I made for her. She seems to prefer the soil in one of the ficus tree pots. That soil is of the right moisture and consistancy, but it's only a few inches before the roots start tangling up. She hasnt eatin at all in three days. She looks low-carrying still, and is a good grenn coloration but is very lethargic and actually looks like she has trouble moving around and climbing. Sorry for the rambling, but again, we've never been through this before so we are a little anxious about it. Any more info is greatly appreciated. Thanks yet again. -Josh

What if you put some of the coconut fiber on top of the plant's soil? Just for now while she's trying to lay, then remove it after so the plant stays healthy. That way she would have more to dig in.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. I may try that, but right now I'm worried about changing things up and disturbing her. She is really close to the bottom, so for me to do that I would have to handle her, which I'm not sure I want to do. Are these rational concerns?

lele Sep 24, 2004 09:07 AM

name in the subject gets your attention - huh?

Yes, all your concerns are rational esp. for a first time. Luna drove me nuts for months. Can you take and post a picture of her? Maybe we can determine something from that. Is she still drinking? Don't worry about food (not much room in that belly) but water is important. You could mist her with hot water (cools when it hits the air) from way above so it just lightly falls on her - unless this would disturb or stress her.

I agree that you shouldn't disturb her. If she leaves the pot and you can put some of the mix on top of the soil go ahead.

How far is your vet from you? Depending on how things go you may want to get an x-ray to see what's going on inside but I would wait to see if she lays on her own.

Try to give her privacy. Keep a towel or other covering and just peek ocassionally to make sure she is OK. Is the pot with the soil in it close to the ficus? Luna surprised me when I found her in the laying tub since she had given little notice before hand.

How are her temps? Is she warm enough? yeah, pic of her and her setup might help.

a very empathetic,
lele

that "name in the title" thing was a sorry attempt at a joke. It's not the first time no one understood one of my jokes, so dont feel bad. haha. Her temps are fine. I moved her basking light and her uvb light nearby, just to be sure. I have a vet that Im very close to calling, but, as you said, I want to see if she'll take care of this herself. Plus, to be honest, I cant really afford a vet trip right now. If it becomes neccesary for that, then I'll have to make due, though. I have also been misting her lightly with warm water. I dont see her drink, but it gets on her so I think she's getting some. She doesnt look dehydrated. I took some pics, but I'm still trying to figure out how to post them. As soon as I do, they'll be up.

go to link below where I explained to another poster (different KS forum, how to post pix).

As for the vet trip...if things get serious and she cannot lay on her own, thus eggbound, it is sure death for her. A trip to the vet may also result in the same but at least you will know you tried. Here is an article you should take a look at http://www.anapsid.org/dystocia.html

Ok, I figured it out. I'll have to do two different posts though Here is her setup

jwthought Sep 24, 2004 11:23 AM

Thanks for that article. I've read that before, I think you posted it to someone else a while back. I dont think she has that (knock on wood), as she isnt kicking the dirt or even really looking for a place to lay. However, if she doesnt improve soon, I will take her to the vet. Here is what she looks like now. What do you think?

lele Sep 24, 2004 11:48 AM

she looks just like Luna did - fat thighs and full-figured

My guess is that you will find her head down and tail up in the air very soon. I think you asked about nighttime laying and I don't think I answered. That is when they typically dig and lay. Figure in the wild they would be less vulnerable doing it then - that is just my theory as to why. Once she begins digging she will be fine. I was amazed at how Luna got clean after being covered with all that sand! Her face, eyes, mouth - all over. Once she was done and I found her on her upper branches she was spotless - and had not taken a dripper shower yet! lol!

Just curious - does she go up higher to sleep at night? Not that it is indicative of anything, I'm just wondering.

Well, its a relief to hear that Luna looked the same way. But now I'm confused again. I was under the impression that they refuse food during this time. She has been refusing but today she ate 6 or 7 crix. I was glad because I was able to get some calcium and vitamin supplement in her, but the fact that she ate at all surprised me. No, she doesnt go any higher to sleep. That's been her spot for the last few days. Just wanted to let you know how helpful you've been. I really appreciate it. Please bear with me! haha

lele Sep 24, 2004 12:30 PM

that was one of the confusing things with Luna. Eat, not eat, eat, not eat. This went on for 5 months! Maybe this last feast will help push the eggs thru!

I am happy to be able to give back to this forum - by helping someone else in an area I truly understand - after all the help I got. I have this thread marked for email notification (I am guessing you might too, considering the "conversation" we are having). I work from home so I'm here for ya!

Lola has hardly budged from the position she was in in the pic i posted. That was 3 days ago, i think. do you think its time to call a vet? Like i said before , i really want to see if she'll get through this on her own, but I cant do this for much longer. I'm losin it! Any more thought? Thanks
