question about breeding chahouas

cowpers Sep 23, 2004 10:36 AM

hi... i've been noticing that there is very litting info out there on breeding chahouas... i currently have a pair of isle e's that have been together for a bit of time now... i was wondering if they require any sort of cooling period or something else to initiate breeding... they often spend their days resting together but at night will go off separately... the male has given chase twice so far as i have seen but the female seems wholly unresponsive... she is almost 20 months now... also once they mate should i be looking for bite marks around her neck and how long does it take between breeding and egg laying... the reason for my latter question is that i have a naturalistic enclosure so i would like a decent timeframe on when laying should occur after mating so that i can go on a little egg hunt to hopefully find them and incubate them properly... thanks for all the help-paul

No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful.

Personally i'd drop the temps some this fall, you will notice them start eating less. Then in the spring up temps and you will see food intake increase a lot and eggs to follow. I've only caught my chahoua breeding once in the past 2 years and have very nice production from them. They tend to be slower reproductivly then the other rhac's, mine tend to lay ever 6-8 weeks or so. They don't bury their eggs or make use of an egg box in my expirience but rather the female has laid her eggs under a piece of cork bark everytime. I found the best information in the Rhacodactylus book by Henkel and Seipp, wasn't nearly as impressed with the de vosjoli, repashy fast book in any respects.
