Normal Anoles getting tropical colors? Check this out

theleohut Sep 23, 2004 11:06 AM

I live here in florida and i have probably 300 anoles running around my 2 acre yard. I saw this girl outside my window. she had a VERY bright orange/red head, looked to be about 6 months old, maybe 4. I caught this one about 5 days ago. And i've been watching around my yard very closely for a large male/female with that orange/red head. Because if so i want to breed these and see what colors i get out and if i can mix! Well today i went searching and found a male with the same color head!!! It has to be 6-7 months old but its a male so i think its is it's clutch mate. Same eggs, or same father/mother.

Has anyone seen these anoles develope these type of colors befor?

these are pictures of the smaller female, i just caught the male today, looks EXACTLY the same but a little bigger and has the puffer under his throat. Agin the question is, will this traite carry on to offspring. And has anyone seen these regular anoles get these types of colors befor, i've seen 1000's over my 20 years living in this house and this is a FIRST for these with colors like this.

It's nothing unusual. Most juveniles are born with a little orange on their heads. It varies from anole to anole. It'll go away in a few weeks. If you bred them together you would get... baby anoles that might have orange heads which will disappear in a few weeks. Let me know when you find a 'bino. Brooks

Yeah, I guess it probably varies from area to area... but I'd say 65% of the juvies I see around here have very bright, rust-colored or red heads. I guess it's just less common in your area if you hadn't seen that yet, but it's common in brown anoles in general.
