I found a snake about 3 ft long in the basement. The colors are greyish brown. There are splotches, they almost look like stripes but aren't, that are the same colors just darker. I live in Huntsville Alabama. I don't have a picture. I thought copperhead, but the head isn't flat at all. The snake appears to be fairly young.

Without a picture, ID is tricky at best, but my guess (based on your location, and snakes I've caught in that area) is Gray Rat Snke. I'm sure that another poster can link to a good picture, which should help you ID the snake.
