Heard of a glossy????

glossysnake Sep 23, 2004 04:29 PM

I just recieved a glossy snake and had never even heard of it. I went to petco and the specialist on hand hadn't even heard of it. He looked it up and found out a bit about them, but I am really at a loss to figure out what is the best habitat for the snake and what the feeding requirements are. I am pretty much a novice and just need lots of help.

I am assuming you are asking about Arizona elegans. They are quite common in my area of the southwest. I have one that was wc in S Nevada and has been thriving for several years. I think you will be fine with husbandry techniques similiar to what you would use for other dry habitat colubrids like Calif Kings or Gopher/Bull snakes. I keep mine on aspen bedding with a hide and a water bowl. An apropriate sized mouse every week to ten days should be fine. I was feeding mine an adult F/T mouse weekly but cut back because the snake seems prone to obesity (too much skin showing between scales when the snake has an empty stomach.) It has never attempted to bite, never has a problem with shedding, but occasionaly skips a meal or two.
