New Box Turtle and sexing

norristhenut Sep 23, 2004 07:36 PM

Last week my wife and I were down near the Ohio River area after the heavy flooding and happened on a Box Turtle sitting along side the road, with no where to get near a dry spot. So we now have her I think, with our male. I think it’s a girl
based on the larger size and a very short tail. The other features are male like reddish eyes, a little concave plastrom. My male turtle doesn’t do much except look at the other turtle. Is the short tail a good indicator?
Thank you Norristhenut

you cannot sex by one characteristic, like a short tail, which could just be a birth defect, maybe it's a juvi, as I just posted no one should be taking wild box turtles from their habitat UNLESS it's life is seriously threatened by a man made thing like a road! or children(yes children are a man made thing), flooding occures natrually, and box turtles are well adapted to water though they are more comfortable on land they do know how to swim, anyway!

do you have a picture of the animal?
