Handling a leopard gecko

tim5580 Sep 23, 2004 08:18 PM

How should I handle the leopard gecko? Just pick it up around the middle? I figured it would dislike that the least, rather than grabbing it's head or tail.
And my baby ate 5 mealworms today when I was gone and it just hides when I am in the room. Maybe I scare it. By the way, can leopard geckos see red light? I think I read somewhere they can't see red or black lights so it looks like dark to them, I want to watch it but I don't want to piss it off by having a red light on all night in the cage.

lol dont try to handle that often since it's young still, yet try to lure it into your hand w/ a treat thats what i did just be patient, best thing to do is to really leave it be for a while stress sucks, period. Also they can't see red bulbs b/c they see in black and white i believe ... ya i'm pretty sure they see black and white can't remember but just to clarify the red bulb is it looks like a dark shade of grey to them

Yes, after your gecko has settled in about a week you can start handling it. Gently grasp it by the middle but make sure it feels secure. They hate it when their feet are dangling..lol.
I use red light bulbs. They can't see it but they can feel the heat. Also they have good eyesight at night so it could probably see you anyway. Give him time to get used to you. They calm down alot after about 6 to 7 months. Hope this helps,

Yeah I want to play with him, but I know I have to give him time to settle in, I think having him in my bedroom is probably stressing him too. I put him on the dresser and I try not to bug him except for food, water, and poop stuff. I know I should put him in a less traffic area but I only got the room my boas in, my bedroom, or downstairs in kitchen or living room. The basement and the 3rd upstairs room are too drafty, I don't want him catching a cold. And I thought a 3 bedroom house would be big enough for just me.

I wish I had a 3 bedroom house for just me..........

I have my gecko in my room too so don't feel like you are the only one with animals in your room. She's also on top of my dresser.

I pick her up by the middle, she likes it. She also likes trying to fly (she'll put her arms out over my fingers and pretend like she's flying, she's safe, cause her back feet are on my pinky finger and her hands are over my first finger so she could put them down, I think she does it because she loves being super gecko! lol).

Have fun with your gecko!

All of my animals are in my room..lol. They don't seem to have any problems with that though. As long as they get fed..they're happy..

I think that's true for all of my animals. They don't mind it at all. When I go to bed I watch TV, and that's when I turn off the regular bulbs and turn on the UVB Bulbs for the animals.

That's when I look over and notice all of them staring at the TV like it was some sort of light source. I like to think they watch TV, it's pretty cool.
