Last Clutch of the season! Saved the best for last!

John Q Sep 23, 2004 09:42 PM

This is my last clutch for the '04 breeding season. I usually prefer to work with known genetics and not multi-het breeders. Surprises are nice but with each extra gene the percentage of known results goes down. In this case, the multi-het worked out in my favor. This is the best ending to a breeding season that I have ever experienced.
Small clutch, 2nd clutch, and not really expected expecially since the male was just barely up to size. Out of 8 eggs, 7 made it through incubation, 6 are out. 1 snow, 2 lavenders, and 3 opals. They are also 100% het for motley and aztec pattern. Horrible pic but I'll put up some better ones later.

I see the snow, but the others look like normals and amels to me???

Here's a couple of my typical amels. If you compare these you'll see that amels usually show more red as hatchlings. Mine have shown more red, the blotches, and orange background peaking through the blotches. Even when in shed and having the white dull look you can see that their overal color is red. Very different from the hatchlings in the cup.

What's the different between opals and snows? how can you tell you have lavenders? i'm confused, because if I cross my double het and snow, I get pretty much what you got there, unless I'm seein' things wrong. (I also get anery, but what the heck) Please explain, for maybe I'm seein' things wrong...

Dunno... I'm not sure I would assert lavender or opal on any of those snakes... they certainly look like they could be HET for lavender... Have they shed yet? If not, then I'd say they're more likely hets rather than homozygous...

That one normal with the weird markings is extremely cool.

Please excuse the crappy crop-job on these clutch collages, but they are my id pics for a couple clutches this year.

Here is a clutch containing a lavender (bottom left), normals, and 3 hypo lavs (2 dark are females, lightest one is a male). These were taken just after their first sheds. Notice that fresh lavenders are mocha brown and white. NO orange circles between the saddles on their necks.

Here's a clutch of normals, anerys, amels, and snows. I don't have a young opal picture, but they always appear much lighter to me than the amels in your picture.

Thanks to Hurley and to Steve for sharing knowledge from their hands on experience. Since I haven't produced lavenders or opals nor have I raised them from hatchlings, I misinterpreted the unexpected results. I was only expecting double hets and amels. The aztec lavender male came in as a sub-adult and I wasn't expecting him to breed until next year. I wasn't expecting him to be het for anery. This small clutch is just an extra to a great year. I just need to slow down sometimes and not jump to conclusions.
