Has anyone tried using small pond pumps in your monitors soaking tubs?

monitorman315 Sep 23, 2004 10:08 PM

Im considering this idea instead of the fish tank pumps in my salvator tub. I would think that pumps for ponds would be more durable and there would be less of a chance of clogging. So if if anyone has tried this approach any pro and cons will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello James!

I recieved your SASE, and mailed it, whereby it was returned with NO forwarding address???? I was/am totally baffled.... can you send me your current, correct mailing address and SASE again?

FOr water pumps, there was/is an excellent posting thread on this on cybersalvator.com forum about it that might be a good resource for you on this topic....

Cheers James,

Hi there james,

In my experience, rodent hair will eventually clog virtually any pump out there on the market...Personally, i think the pump thing will end up being a waste of money, as it will probably burn out soon after getting it...

One option that some people use is a shopvac(wet/dry vac) to suck the water out; there are even models now with a hose connection, where you can direct the waste outside without having to lug a big, heavy vaccum full of poo water outside to dump it...

Another option, which I am currently setting up for a new acquisition, is to install a bulkhead drain in the water tub, where you simply drain the water down into a bucket, which is then easier to carry(and safer) to the toilet/slop sink/outside, etc... I posted some pics of the setup a couple of days ago, just look down for the post entitled "for all you salvator keepers"..

I hope this helps a bit, but like I said, I have had bad luck using pumps to clean out monitor poo water, as he hair will eventually clog up the turbine and burn out the motor... just what i've seen firsthand, i'm sure others may use it without incident... Cheers, have a good one,

bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info. I remember your post a few days ago. I think i responded to it. When i began building my salvator enclosure i flirted around with the drainage idea as well but decided against it and went with a wet/dry vac. As for the pump ,I was just looking for a way to keep from having to change the water so frequently and figured a pond pump would work much better than a standard aquarium pump. But i didnt even think about the hair in the feces burning out the motor until you mentioned it. So thanks , i'll just continue with my current method or consider a getting an aquarium vac.

Cheers

If your trying to like filter the water i geuss is what your saying, lol i just woke up s im probably off and ont fully understand the topic but umm here ya go

What about a Magnum 350 filter the thing is really diesel, and every thing goes through the filter pad befor it would be near the impleller, so it wouldnt realy be able to clog it i know people that havnt cleaned this thing in 5 months and its still been running, the things really baddass to say the least. lol

Hope this helped or somthing
