URGENT Poop Question

triad Sep 24, 2004 10:21 AM

So I went upstairs to check on my animals before giving my dog a bath. I looked in on Kalypso my leo gecko and she had recently pooped.

My question is this: There is a stain on her tile near and around her poop that is this brownish color. It's color resembles that of coffee that has been spilled and has dried on a tiled surface. Like dark around the edges and very very light in the middle.

I'm wondering if this is just normal. I had had her on reptile carpeting but then I transferred her onto tile last sunday. So I hadn't seen this before.

I'm just concerned that's all. She's been eating wax worms. She doesn't like any other type of worm besides wax as of right now. She's had 7 worms yesterday (4 were medium-larged size and 3 were small baby wax worms that were in the container).

If you all could help me, I would be thankful.

Thanks in Advance!

That just sounds like urine. You've prolly never seen it before because its been absorbed into your reptile carpet... hmm!

Actually I think it's just a bodily liquid. It's very normal. Their urine is the white solid part with the poop. I wouldn't worry. Also wax worms should be fed as treats. They get addicted to them and they aren't as healthy for them as like crix or mealworms.

So let me get this straight, Kalypso's urine is white and solid?

Good to know. I had no idea what that white stuff was until now.

Ok, so now wax tonight, what shall I feed her instead? I get crickets every wednesday but for the past couple weeks she hasn't been eating the crickets.

Don't mealworms have a hard shell? If so how shall I prepare them?

Mealworms just need to be gutloaded. Put them in a container and feed them carrots. Do this 24 hours before you feed them to your gecko. Maybe the reason your gecko won't eat the crix is because she is always getting waxworms that she's used to them.
Hope this helps!

See I only give crix 1 time a week because when I do buy them I buy them for all of my animals. So I usually get 50 Large at 1 time so I do this 1 time a week because it gets expensive after awhile.

Ok, I'll try the meal worm thing.

What does feeding them carrots do? I know carrots improve eye sight, at least it does for people.

Just to be sure, there's no hard shell on the mealworms that could possibly threaten Kalypso's life( like hard shell that would cut up her insides and cause her to die or anything)?

Thanks again

Carrots just add vitamins. I know crix can get expensive. I was spending like $10 a week!! I switched to mealworms and love them. Here's a link on breeding/care of mealworms. Site Hope this helps!

The shells are a little hard..but it's nothing that will cause your leo harm

Carrots by themselves don't make a very good gutload. You should try adding mixed grains for protein and extra nutrients. Leafy green veggies (but not spinach or iceberg lettuce) are great too.

I also think you should continue feeding crickets and try to stay away from a mealworm-only diet. Crickets are more expensive, but you get what you pay for, which is a better food item in the long run. If you can go through 50 crickets feeding just once a week, you may want to consider ordering online to save money.

Why not?? Just curious b/c I hadn't heard that before.

Spinach is high in oxalic acid, which in high levels can inhibit calcium absorbtion.

I take this gutload stuff very seriously, if you couldn't tell already. My pets eat better than I do. Here are some links you may find helpful on the subject.

Thanks for the info. I actually just keep my mealies in wheat middlins. I feed them on potatoes and apples mostly. Then when I offer them I put them in the calcium dish so the leos get a bit of calcium with every mealie. The Crix on the other hand are fed a constant diet of hi pro dog and or cat food, they also get the potatoes and apples. Then I gut load the crix on a diet of fish food flakes ground up and mixed with calcium for at least 24 hours before feeding. Lots of protein in them buggers. I am going to back off on the mealies though as my male is really lazy and don't want to chase the crix. I think if he doesn't have the easy feed of mealies, he'll start chasing crix and getting better exercise. My female loves her crix and greets me every am when I get home, waiting for her crix. She can eat 6-8 a day.

I just looked at that chart and it seems apples are pretty useless too. Looks like time change feed for them worms. Did not see the break down for the potatoes though
