Do turtles release pheromones into the water.

goalkper7 Sep 24, 2004 11:24 AM

I was noticing that my male turtle likes to bite and latch on to my female turtle every now and again and I was just assuming that it was because he was trying to mate which most of the time he was. But them I was wondering if he was releasing pheromones into the water as a part of the mating cycle. Thus since he is releasing pheromones the filter can not get rid of the “smell” and it is over powering the “smell” of the female causing him to think that there is another male turtle in his tank, causing him to defend it? It smells far fetched but could it be happening?
