sick tegu!

callidryas Sep 24, 2004 12:10 PM

I have a big problem right now with my tegu.... it stopped eating about a week and a half ago and refuses to go out of its shelter... i tought it was because of the temp and if i insisted a lot he would eat a bit... but today when i grabbed him in the morning, it started shivering very hard and getting its limbs attached to its body strongly.... its eyes look very bad and its saliva is very sticky and white... i don't know whats wrong and unfortunately there's no herp vet in my town... in the state as a matter of fact... what should i do? i already gave it a warm bath and now its resting in a box with soft clothes, a lamp on top of him and some boiled egg in case it gets hungry... help please!

I am not a vet and I am just going on information I have heard not experience but it could be as simple as brumation although the shivering would pretty much rule that out. It could be MBD. Trembling is one of the signs. Do you use suppliments? what type ov UV lighting do you use? How old is the bulb? How old and how big is your Tegu? Your discription of the saliva might suggest URI (upper resperitory infection). What is the humidity in your encolsure? Do you hear any wheezing? You may need to treet with Baytril. It can be dosed PO or injected IM. But it must be perscribed by a vet.

i am no vet but it sounds to me like MBD. my first tegu had it and did die. are its fingers and toes wigeling? if so i think he has MBD

It sounds like MBD to me as well. Bring the tegu to a vet ASAP, it can be reversible with the right treatments as long as the disease hasn't progressed to far. If you don't have a UVA/UVB full spectrum light please get one and if you do have one make sure it isn't any older than six months...those things expire. I hope your tegu gets better...keep us posted.
