Shafter specimen

Belikin Sep 24, 2004 12:38 PM

I am currently looking for any alterna from the Shafter area (South of Marfa). Also looking for Pinto Canyon specimens, as well as Davis Mts. Will pay cash, or able to trade 2004 hatchling alterna from Black Gap. Also have hatchling Mexican Black Kings (no speckling), Pueblo, annulata, greeri.

Seriously I would check with Ric Blair or Mike Price. Someone who hunts locations away from the mainstream. I wish you good luck. I don't know of many taken from that area.

I know Troy H doesn't have any but he may know someone who does so you may want to ask him as well.

Take Care and Best Wishes,

Steven

Thanks Steve... My old man lives in Marfa, so he collects these areas. Trying to add some bloodline to the few animals I have from these localities.

My son and I hunted Shafter this summer but no luck... I would love to see pics of specimens from there if you have any?? Have you hunted upriver west from Presidio? Thanks and good luck!!

I live in Kansas, and the animal is with my old man in Texas. He's a real "old timer" and has no camera or internet. But he is bringing the animal up in November, and I will digitally photograph it and post it here. Yes, the terrain WEST of Presidio is real enticing once you get far enough up (near Candelaria and Ruidoso)If you head north of there you end up in Pinto Canyon (unbelievable area) but it's a dirt road and very treacherous! Canyon walls on one side of the road, and straight drop off on the other side (Way down if you know what I mean). I tore my ranger up a few years back on that road trying to turn around. Wheels wouldn't catch on the sloped dirt road and when they did it shot me straight into the cliffs. But if only you could find that one alterna. I think they are as rare as they come down there in Pinto Canyon. My old man says he caught only one back in the 70's. That Shafter animal was his first one in that area in 33 years. He probably only hunts Shafter once or twice a year these days.. but even still!

I collected Candelaria and Ruidoso but never saw much. I still think it would produce if you could stay with it. Pinto Canyon was about the same for me. Bob Mackin says he collected alterna in Pinto C. and I hear he has been hunting there for the past few years. Might be someone to talk to.

Thanks for the info and I look forward to seeing the pics later!! Pinto canyon is beautiful and I agree with Rick that you will get them there if you stick with it. I have not hunted there in over twenty five years but did back in the late seventies without any alterna. I have always been interested in the ruidosa and shafter areas too.

Hey Rick, did you see Bob's Pinto animal?? later, hugh
