Question for Keith Hillson

crom Sep 24, 2004 12:46 PM

I'm going to fulfill a dream and purchase an Eastern at the NARBC in Chicago in a couple of weeks. I've got other snakes but never a King of any sort. After seeing all your photos I've got to have one. Question is, what should I look for in a young Eastern? Any help will be appreciated.

Do you mean physically or visually ? Physically its like any other snake good muscle tone alertness i.e. tongue flicking reaction etc... Also ask the dealer questions like what do the parents look like ? How big are they ? Is this snake eating FT ? Most baby Easterns look great as hatchlings but can turn gray to tan (in the white crossbars) after about a year and look rather blah. I always want to see pics of the parents of the snakes Im buying, sometimes its not possible and you just take a chance. I'll be honest though more babies will get dull as adults then stay bright white. As far as look of an Eastern that comes down to personal preference and Im sure you know what you like. Good luck and I hope you find a good one as they are pretty damn cool snakes but Im baised. Im gonna try and hit that show as well on saturday. Where are you coming from ? Do you live in the Chicago area ?

thanks for the quick reply. My main concern is what they will turn in to. Thats a great suggestion, asking for pictures. I wish more vendors would bring in adults - it would be a lot easier to make a decision. I'm from Michigan and hope to hit it on Saturday also. I went last year and was amazed at the amount of snakes and the amount of interest.

Im originally from Detroit, Michigan but I escaped from there back in 1982 to Madison, WI . Yeah at the very least the vendors should have pics of their stock at the shows. I know when I sell animals that Ive bred I always display or email pics of the adults to let people know what their animal has the potential to be as it ages.
