CJBianco ... I replied to your post re: planter bases below.

But you 2 and everyone else should check out:

www.proexotics.com/FAQ_answers_Hide_Spots.html

Read the whole thing, especially the last paragraph.

To take it 1 step futher, the entire ProExotics FAQ is a very good read.

Seems it's a toss-up between the flat cork bark and the terra cotta base. If I was a snake, I think I'd prefer the terra cotta...although the flat cork bark would give a nice surface to help shedding. I doubt that smooth terra cotta (especially when used with plain ol' newspaper) would help shedding as well.

Thanks for the link.

Think like a snake ... not like a person thinking like a snake!

The snake wants to be 100% covered. I'm not saying AT ALL that cork bark or something similar wouldn't do the job, but what I'm saying is how can something that covers snakey entirely NOT do the job?

And the snake will shed fine with just the terra cotta pot. She will rub against the semi-circle entrance hole you have created, as well as against waterbowls or other cage furniture. (My BP setups are very simple ... 2 hides and a water bowl that the snake can go under ... thus making it a multi-purpose waterbowl/hide ... use a dog bowl with openings on the sides).

Cork bark is feather-light and even a medium sized ball python would basically just be pushing it around rather than rubbing against it.

Do you sand/grind the edges to make it smooth?

Finnigan Sep 24, 2004 02:43 PM

Yes ... I use an emory board to sand the edges after I smacked out the hole. Emory board works fine and you can sand the semi-cirlce opening smooth in less than a minute.
