removing adhesive under-tank heater from an aquarium...

unchikun Sep 24, 2004 01:51 PM

...anyone have any experience doing this? the 10-gallon i kept junior in as a tiny baby has one on the bottom that i was thinking might be salvageable, but i'm not sure if they're really ok to use. i threw out the paperwork that the thing came with, but it seems like i remember it saying that it couldn't be reused... but then again, that might be something they say going on the assumption that someone who tries removing one would bend up the wires inside, making it inoperable and/or unsafe (which is my concern). any thoughts? my tank's at a good temp wight now, but i like having a back-up heat source for when it gets colder.

Yes, you can remove, or at least I have. I simply retaped it onto another tank using duct tape.
Hope that helps.

Try using a heat gun or blowtorch to heat the adhesive enough to make it release... I'm sure it will function if you can get it physically detached without mangling the thing...
