I can't believe it!!! I found a PETSTORE that is actually decent!!

Krystal19_85 Sep 24, 2004 03:37 PM

I went to my favorite pet store today because I saw that they changed their name (they used to be mostly supplies and fish with some rodents. They have always been clean and all in all a good store. When I saw they had new ownership and Exotics was added in the name I HAD to go check it out! They had all kinds of herps, and I was VERY impressed with the way they keep things. They were all in seperate enclosures, aside from some hatchling map turtles and a couple leo gex, and they were very clean. They even had racks like the real herpers have. I talked to the woman in charge of the reptile section and she was pretty knowledgeable and helpful, I held a few of the ball pythons and a boa and they all looked parisite free and healthy. The animals were all lively. With the acception of a couple semi-skinny ball pythons, everything looked GREAT! They had some really nice setups and even the room the majority of the herps were in was temperature controlled! I was telling them how good it looked and that I was shocked that it was that nice in there. I am going to go back this weekend , then again next week and if all looks good both times I think I am going to apply there. My boyfriend wants to buy one of their baby ball pythons, but I told him I woulden't untill I was sure about the place, so I am going to look around on the places online that I KNOW are reputable and see if I can find him one that is up to par.

I forgot to mention they even bring their animals to local herp shows! It is a really nice store now. It is called Aqua Exotics and it is here in SE Michigan I believe it is in Bloomfield. It used to be Aqua Nest. I will try and see if I can find the website if they have one, I know Aquanest did.

No Problem. If you have something to do down this way I would definitly check them out. I am going back Sunday, and next week. I am probably going to apply there, it is just over 6 miles from my house. I need to ask them what shows they are going to be at. I am probably going to be in Taylor next month, but I don't know of many other shows, you have any ideas?

I go there all the time to get crixs/mice. They do have a very clean nice setup, but they arent perfect. The bearded dragons they always get are usually way to young, and there are way to many in one cage. They also have a 4 foot savanah monitor in a 55 gal or so aquarium. Not to mention the Baskilisk in a 29 gal with 3 iguanas. None of them know a ton about most of there lizards, though they have a couple guys that are pretty knowledgable with snakes.

I go there all the time to get crixs/mice.

>I didn't see any mice when I was there Friday or today, maybe I just missed them?

They do have a very clean nice setup, but they arent perfect.

>Noone is

The bearded dragons they always get are usually way to young, and there are way to many in one cage.

>There was only one young one and it seemed to be of decent age. There was none with more than 3 in a cage.

They also have a 4 foot savanah monitor in a 55 gal or so aquarium.

>That I did notice, and the gator's setup (the smaller one) was a little tight.

"Not to mention the Baskilisk in a 29 gal with 3 iguanas.

>Must have missed the baskilisk, but I really didn't look too hard at the iggys.

None of them know a ton about most of there lizards, though they have a couple guys that are pretty knowledgable with snakes.

>> They had a girl who knew her lizards pretty well, but there aren't many knowledgeable people around here, so they are learning still.

I actually was there today and they were treating a boa and a burm/retic hybrid for mites and talking to me about it. I was really happy to see them actually doing something about it, unlike other pet stores who will just let them sit in the little critters.

My BF bought a baby ball today, we are hopefull that it is a female, so in a couple years my guy can have a girlfriend. She is healthy and active and seems to be parisite free thus far. I will post pictures when my digi cam's batterys are charged.

My point with them is they are the only petstore I have found who is so much as decent with herps. I wasn't trying to imply that they are perfect, just thought I would share. Sorry if I come off as rude, I am not trying to be, just saying what I saw.

P.S. where are you located?

You will see the beardies eventually. They get like 15-20 at a time, all like 3 weeks old, maybe younger. Unfortunetly, this is going to happen in just about every pet store that sells reptiles, as they probably make the most amount of money off of them.

They sell F/T mice and rats, but you need to ask for them. I'm surprised you didnt ask what they were feeding all those snakes :P

I wasnt trying to be mean or anything, as they are alot better then 90% of most pet stores, but they are still out to make money. I've listened to one of them tell a teenager and his mom that the anaconda they have for sale doesnt get "That" big.

Yeah, this is the first time I have been there since they changed (and second now, since we went back today) so I woulden't know about the beardies. I was just supprised at how much better they take care of their animals than the other pet stores.

Funny they said that about the 'conda LOL. I actually asked to take him out and they said they didn't let people handle him because he has a bad attitude LOL. I didn't expect him to cuddle to me and fall asleep!

The BP we just got is doing well, except we have her in a temporary tank right now (old aquarium) and my cat won't leave her alone, she just lays there and watches her roam. Need to get something to cover some of the sides so she doesn't get too stressed. I tried to get her to eat, only on the first day because she is really small and kind of skinny. She turned it down, but I expected that since the mouse was a little big for her and it was day 1, but I had to try. Guess I will have to try again after a few days. (I use the female refrences loosely, we just HOPE it is a girl LOL!)

We actually stoped by Petco right after we got her and some guy said he was tought to pop them, so I reluctantly let him try, watching closely to make sure he didn't injure her. He just looked for spurs and said it was a girl LOL. Cute how simple some people are. He also said he likes the "Royal Ball Pythons" because they have the gold colors, but she was probably too young to tell if she was a "royal" or not LOL.

I would leave the ball alone for a good week, and defenetly keep the cat away, they can get really stressed.
