New Baby Black Racer...Mean as Hell lol

HerperHelmz Sep 24, 2004 05:01 PM

Ok,

I just got me a hatchling southern black racer today, from Florida. The only problems I can see with keeping it successfully are 1) I have no anoles, so I'm hoping snakes will work 2) The snake is extremely mean, snapping at the tank when I walk by and 3) I never kept southern racers, so I know nothing about their care.

Anybody wanna give me some hints/tips as to how to get this thing feeding, and how to atleast somewhat tame it. Also, other care advice like, enclosure setup, temps, and all that other good stuff.
It's important I keep this thing successfully, otherwise it's snake food

Hi there:

Racers will eat snakes, but I never feed herptiles of any kind to other herptiles. For a baby, try grasshoppers, snake skins, small mice, earthworms or spiders. I know the whole snake skin thing sounds ridiculous, but I read somewhere that captive racers fed on shed snake skins placed in their cage. Mice are good enough for a basis of the diet.
People think that these guys bash into the walls of the cage if the cage is too small, but actually the size of the cage isn't what causes that. It just matters how close they are to something to bash themselves to death trying to get at you.
When my father was young, he kept some black racers and a blue racer. They like to do everything, which means that your setup should include a place(s) to swim, speed, climb, hide, bask swim etc.
