delilah does not seem to like being outside.......

starmom Jun 26, 2003 11:06 PM

I have a 66 gal reptarium, I have provided a basking log and a large dish with water, as well
as adequate shade.....

she seems unhappy in the reptarium and turns dark......

maybe its too hot? we are in a heatwave in ny now......

also do you switch to lower wattage bulbs in the summer, the other day delilah was gaping continiously for around 20 minutes and I then turned off her
bulb (t rex uvb basking)ive seen l20 in the basking spots and also then turned them off for awhile, all my dragons are hanging out under their basking spots
or under their hammocks under the basking spots.

thanks for input in advance.......
Sue

well some dragons do like the hotter spots, i know carrick sometimes likes to sit at a real warm spot. He has multileveled basking area from 95 and up, he will sit at around 105 a lot of the day, right after he eats he goes higher to the higer temps and later in the day sits between cool and warm around 95. So long as you have a cool area to move them to and the temps arent above 115-120 she should be fine, she can move to the cool area if she feels too hot, see dragons are lazy, instead of moving, they just gape to cool off =) if your basking areas are getting too warm in the summer you can switch to lower wattage bulbs and then just double check the temps again, so far we have stayed with the same bulbs as our place stays pretty cool. As for being outside, how old is delilah? it can be pretty stressful for young dragons to be outside, also dragons will darken up to absorb the sun, is she flattening out and darkening up? when they are all warmed up is when they lighten up and turn their brightest =)

I have one that doesn't like to be outside, either; he becomes pretty aggressive. I would switch to a lower watt bulb & see if that helps.
