Is Matamata very rare and very expensive?

Jacky Sep 24, 2004 08:47 PM

Hi all this is the first time i am posting in this page and i am a turtle lover. Still a rookie though. And would like to ask more bout the said turtle before putting down my money. Is Matamata really that rare that its prices are so high or is it just mark up by those pet traders?

I got an offer from a friend for a 3 inch (just the carapace) Matamata and the price is USD360. Is the price reasonable? Please correct me if we are not suppose to talk bout prices here. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks all.

Regards
Jacky

Matamatas are not really rare, it is just they are very hard to find in the wild because of where they live. They also do not commonly breed in captivity. The smaller ones also have trouble making it past six inches. 360USD is a bit much for a small one. Most adult matamatas go from 300-500. I've seen small ones go for as low as 150.

Thank you very much for your info. I really love that small Matamata the guy is offering me but too bad the price is a little high. In my place its really hard to have this small size Matamata to come by. Anyway do you own any of them? Share some experience maybe? Many thanks.

Most turtle prices are negotiable, as with anything in life. Price is dictated by supply and demand. If there are a few things that many people want, the price goes up. If there many things that only a few people want, the price goes down. I paid $350 for a 2.5 inch (6cm) Mata 4-5 years ago. It was advertised as CB and CR but only the person I bought it from knows for sure. Don't go with what others are paying, stick to what you are willing to pay. Do a full research on everything required before you even consider purchasing one. There are only a few in the US that are CB. Most that you see offered are WC and are not for beginners. Matas are very hard to keep in captivity as compared to other species. I've kept turtles for the last 17 years and Matas are one of the few that I have that require VERY specialized care. I have 5 in my collection, ranging from 5-14 inches and they require my upmost care. I've paid from $300 - $700 USD for matas. Most are very picky eaters and require LIVE fish. Some keepers are lucky and can use frozen/thawed but don't be surprised if your mata only eats live fish. MOST of mine require live rosy reds, mosquito fish, fathead minnow, etc... I DO NOT feed goldfish b/c of the copper issue(most fish farms treat goldfish with copper sulfate to combat disease, parasites, etc....)Please do your research before you purchase. If you have any questions please email me or someone else who is knowlegeable.
