feeding question

Lazor1 Sep 25, 2004 07:14 AM

My new crested i have had almost a week hasnt seemed to find its dish to eat his food yet. He/she licks off of my finger or a leaf next to it bit hasnt eaten out of the dish.
Does anyone have recommendation on how to get it use to feeding out of dish on its own?

maybe try different foods in the dish. instead of using your finger try using the dish up close to him/her.

Use a different dish...maybe one that is very shallow, I use the lids off of babyfood containers on some lower lying branches. That seems to work fine for them, they easily find them without a problem.

if you have a small enclosure without much to obstruct its sight i'd say just use a shallow dish (as advised) and let hunger do its thing. i have a six foot tall display cabinet with vines and all so its not really an option for me so what i've had to do this first five weeks is make them eat. Using a baby food lid with food and supplements, i dip their nose into it a bit and wait. as soon as they start to lick it off their snouts, i have that lid in their in a flash, so as they're licking, their tongue starts to touch the food in the lid. Usually they keep licking and start sticking the tongue way into it to take good licks (that's when you know its working, when you see that whole tongue gettin in there). often they'll start to tilt back their heads as they're licking (probably so gravity can do half the work for them) so i just keep that lid to their mouth and tilt with them. try that and i'll be very surprised if it doesn't work.Once they get into the taste i'm sure they'll start to do it on their own.
