DOR big blackrat in philly......

dan felice Sep 25, 2004 07:15 AM

yesterday i went down a road to a convienence store for a quick stop and was traveling back up the same road less than 5 minutes later. coming around a slight bend, i saw what at first what i thought was a hunk of rubber lying there.....only people were gathering, staring at it. 'it couldn't be' i thought to myself. i pulled over and sure enough, it was a very freshly killed approx. 5' male blackrat! he was jet black as they are in the tri state area and appeared well fed. no doubt somebody's escaped pet. if my timing had only been the slightest bit earlier, i could have saved him as he would've been real hard not to see coming out on the road! really, really a shame as it was a magnificent animal......

What a shame. I hate to see that. I live in a neighborhood in S FL where we see alot of DOR's - corns, corals and the occasional green or ribbon snake. The one that really broke my heart was earlier this summer when I found a beautiful female corn who was gravid with what felt like around six eggs. A few weeks later, I found a live male in the same spot while I was walking my dogs but decided to keep this one. His name is Lucky.......

yeah, we rarely [if ever] see dor snakes around here. actually, all we really ever see here are squirrels and live pigeons. ;>[ i've heard of guys giving up road hunting elsewere though because they got tired of seeing road killed snakes constantly. i can empathize as i was really bummed.....

yeah, there's none to be found around here but cross any bridge into nj and they're a fairly common sight. i saw a monsterous one dead on the side of route 9 outside cape may a few years back. made me sick.....

Actually there are black rat snakes right outside of Philly but if you were inside the city itself it was definately an escaped pet. While they are a little rare right outside the city in PA they are there. I have seen a few of them this year but mainly I see more black racers..some BIG racers 2.. I caught a 5 footer on my lawn, lucky I spotted him since I was mowing.
