obesity...red flush...inactivity..why??

fellow Sep 25, 2004 07:20 AM

here's the situation, i have been feeding my terrapins too much pellets and they are obese.. now, i'm introducing vegetables to them, however, they dun seem to eat it even though i leave veg in their tank.. so i dun really know how to feed them other than cut down on their pellet intake but what if they starve?.. any advice?

next, recently, both my terrapins' beaks were pinkish (red flush?) as compared to normal. after a while, one of them 'got better' and its beak was back to the same color. but for the other terrapin, its beak is still pinkish.. i didn't change their diets too much, the water isn't dirty.. but i had put in a piece of driftwood i picked up of the coast of a beach for a few days b4 removing it becos it gave the water a weird smell ( i had soaked the wood for 2 weeks prior to introducing it into the tank.. was it the problem?? but now, what do i do to help that poor terrapin?

and last but not least, both my terrapins seem to sleep all day even though the pump is on and there is a 'waterfall' to stimulate them to swim.. but when i approach to the tank to feed them, they suddenly spring up with energy and swim anxiously to me, waiting for food.. i guess becos of this inactivity, they are obese.. but how to i get them to be more active??

i would appreciate any advice! thanks!

i can help you on your red flush, but i had have many turtles that i have saved from many different owners that didn't care about them. right now i have 8 turtles in a pond. the one was really obese. i put him in his own tank and fed him once every 3 days instead of every other and he is starting to loose weight and becoming more active. also give him more veggies. if you obesity problem continues i would take him to a vet.
good luck with your turtle

also to help it loose weight make it run around for its food and give it some live fish in a tank so it can swim and eat them

are you sure its ok to feed them once in 3 days? will it starve them or cause them to get gastric?

Turtles can literally go for months without food. 3 days won't hurt them any. Mine only get protein once a week or so, but they get greens daily.
