New feeders

Turt-Liz-Wiz Sep 25, 2004 11:07 AM

I went to the pet shop today, and figured i'sd try something new 4 my lizards for added variety in their diet. The only other option than crix & meallies are, believe it or not.... ant eggs!!! There are also some larvae and pupas. I seperated the adults from the eggs. My question is, can i feed ant eggs/baby larvae/pupae to my lizards? I fed some mixed with calcium supplements to my golden skinks, and they took it with no problem. Is this okay?

Oh, i nearly forgot... The ant eggs have a range of sizes, from 0,4" (1 cm) to 0,2" (0,5 cm). They are actually sold as bird food.

I was not even aware they sold them. I know of ants that ARE sold for horney lizards, (harvester ants) But I did not know reg ant eggs were sold for birds! Interesting!
I dont see why they would be harmful, if the skinks are enjoying them, they must know!

Other feeders are also waxworms, butter worms, silkies.

Thanks for the ant egg info,

I think they are harvester ant eggs. Its like keeping a time bomb, since i dont know when the pupae will turn to adults. Its a bit scary, but quite worth it. They are quite common in SE Asia (i think, but they r common here), and are quite cheap, plus easy to get. I think ive found a new feeder!!!
