She's gonna pop!

Melisondra Sep 25, 2004 01:00 PM

Came home for a visit this weekend and got a picture or Aurora... dear god is she carrying golfballs??
I am a little worried though, she still hasn't lain, I just picked up some sand and am going to make another laying bucket, but her eyes look a bit sunken in and she seems to have a few small black dots around her vent area, it looks like tiny scratch marks but im not sure...
When is too late to do something though? I know that the vets can give them a shot of something (oxytocin comes to mind but its probably wrong) to help them lay eggs, but I dont think my vet around here would even have it...
She ate 2 crickets from my hand today and has more in there, were dusting about every 2 days with the calcium supplement. *shrug* I dunno!
Anyway just wanted to show a pic for anyone who is interested!
Thanks all and good luck to anyone in florida (again)

Erin

I don't know Erin, Luna was never THAT big and lumpy. I think you should at least line up a vet who knows what he/she is doing. An x-ray maybe the way to go soon so you know what is going on. As for feeding, I recall that a few folks recommended against it since there is minimal room in there and Aurora is just gigantic!

Yes, here eyes DO look sunken. How is her behavior in general? Keeping her hydrated is VERY important - more so than food. Did you up her calcium once you knew she was gravid? If I already asked you that forgive my senior moments

I hope others with more experience comment as well.

Also check the photo gallery as Chris Anderson responded there.

And to everyone else basically. Sorry I couldnt reply on the photo page for some reason. I am planning on getting her to a vet asap. The closest one is toledo (hour) but im not sure how knowledgeable they are.
As to feeding and supplementation, I (and my parents) have been feeding her every day to every two days. And dusting every day for the calcium/vitamins. She has always been a fussy drinker also so getting liquids into her has never been easy.
And im not sure if the eggs are fertile or not. She was bred the 30th of july or so (but im not sure anything really happened) and then I went on vacation for a week. When I returned I noticed her getting plump and suspected she was gravid. She has never shown any colors though, gravid or receptive so im never sure with her.

At the time the pic was taken she was puffed out alot, but the lump around her middle was pretty much the same.
I also noticed when I rubbed her sides a bit, I never felt anything really "hard" I guess, but im not an expert so im not sure I would know the diff between an egg and an internal organ or something.

Does anyone know of a good Vet in the Northwest Ohio area? Ft. Wayne, Toledo are all in an hour range. I tried that site that Lele gave me (thanks again) but the vet I went too in town WAS on there and was as clueless about chams as anyone else.
Thanks for the observations all I appreciate it. I will try to keep you updated... I really wish I didnt have to go back to school.

Erin,

here is another site Herp Vet Connection. There are lots of listings in OH with comments who brought there herps there. I think you really need to get her to one - soon. She may very well need help and I would not recommend waiting until you come home again.

I am surprised that she has continued to eat and I am no expert here, but dusting everyday with calcium may be too much. I was giving Luna a liquid calcium supplement, b/c she wasn't eating much. I don't know if over supplementation with calcium while gravid can cause calcification.

Here is the site for Societies and Rescues in OH, too. http://www.anapsid.org/societies/ohio.html Call them to see who they recommend and be clear what the situation is. Direct them to the forum/gallery so they can see the photo.

I hate to say it, but I think that female is beyond repair.
